After redefining the whiskey game with its 10-year rye, WhistlePig is now setting up shop in Bourbon’s backyard with its new Snout-to-Tail Bourbon. Following this launch are plans to open a brand outpost in Louisville, Kentucky, this summer.
Snout-to-Tail Bourbon is aged for 10 years before hitting shelves, and the maturation process is unique to the product’s name: Each barrel includes two barrel heads, a toasted cashew on the ‘snout’ and a smoked cedar toast at the “tail.” The barrels are then flipped to evenly capture each barrel’s flavors. While the process is tedious, we promise you the result is worth the wait.
Snout-to-Tail Bourbon is 88 proof—a clever nod to the 880-mile distance WhistlePig’s Vermont farm and its future downtown Kentucky location—and tastes of warm, layered flavors like brown sugar and roasted almonds. As a bourbon newbie, it’s dangerously easy to sip and surprisingly had me coming back for another sip.
I’ll be honest—I’ve never been much of a bourbon drinker. It’s either too sweet or too bold, no in between. It just always felt too one-dimensional and I like my booze with some complexity. But after trying WhistlePig’s Snout-to-Tail Bourbon, this one changed my mind.
It’s rich on the first sip and there is a nuanced sweetness to it that keeps things interesting without being overbearing. The smokiness from the maple wood is a nice touch, as well.
Following this milestone is the grand opening of The PiggyBank, which is coming to downtown Louisville summer of 2025, where patrons will get to experience bourbon in a space unlike any other. Interactive experiences, special tastings, a rare whiskey vault, and a full-service bar are just a few of the features set to be unveiled at the new outpost.
