At this year’s 32nd annual Gotham awards in New York City, the Netflix show Mo won the category of short-form breakthrough series.

The Gotham awards provide early recognition to independent films and series that have been nominated in various categories. This evening celebrates the writers, directors, producers, and actors who work on these projects and offers them some well-deserved media attention. The annual event took place at Cipriani Wall Street on November 28th, and many well-known names, such as Adam Sandler, was in attendance.

The show Mo was created by Mohammed Amer and Ramy Youssef and focuses on the life of an Arab American family. The series loosely takes elements from the life of Amer, who stars in the show, and the struggles of seeking asylum. Mo offers viewers a perspective into a culture that isn’t commonly presented within mainstream media. The series provides a depiction of a Palestinian family that is undocumented, fleeing from the Middle East to chase a better life in America.

The Knockturnal caught up with Amer, Youssef, and Slick Naim after their win and spoke to them about what the moment meant for them. They also spoke about their experience working together on the show and what they hope to accomplish next.

The evening was presented by Blue Moon Brewing, Cadillac, GreenSlate, Justin Wines and Fiji Water. We had the honor of attending the Gala as a guest of Blue Moon. Blue Moon Brewing Company takes pride in the quality and creativity of its beers and embraces the process it takes to get there. Their founder and head brewmaster dreamt up Blue Moon while living and learning in Belgium. Beyond its signature White Belgian-Style Wheat Ale, the Blue Moon family of brands also includes Blue Moon LightSky, a flavorful, light beer, and Moon Haze, the brand’s juicy take on a hazy pale ale.
