Hannah Marks’ sophomore feature pushes the limits of what a relationship is.
Mark, Mary, and Some Other People is one of those Indies you think about long after because of how different it made you feel. This ambitious romantic comedy, directed by Hannah Marks (who you might remember as Justin Long’s sister in Accepted) is makes you question everything you thought about what it means to be in a relationship.
A few years after their college fling, Mark (Rosenfield) runs into Mary (Law) buying a pregnancy test. After it turns up negative, they quickly marry but Mary starts to feel she’s ended her fun too early. So, she brings it up to Mark, who reluctantly accepts being an an ethical non-monogamous marriage (a.k.a. ‘open-marriage). As their relationship is tested to its limits, Mark and Mary are forced to figure out what they really want.
The performances led by Hayley Law and Ben Rosenfield showcase their comedic timing, making you hope to see them in another rom-com anytime soon. However, the real triumph lies in the pacing of the film. Even though it’s only her second film, Hannah Marks shows her ability to seamlessly weaves the humorous interactions we have with each other between life’s tragic realities.
