On The Scene: The Morning Presentation at New York Men’s Day

Here’s the spring/summer 2022 collection you didn’t know you needed!

New York City kicked off its bi-annual NYMD, menswear collective, presented by Watchfinder & Co on September 8th, 2021. Hosted at Canoe Studios located in the city that never sleeps to display emerging talent through the lens of fashion – it really doesn’t get better than that.

Before I could dive into the morning session at 10:30 am, which would go on till 12 pm, I had a fresh cup of coffee on my radar. The coffee connoisseurs at DeLonghi, served me a delicious cup of an oat latte, equipping me for the fashion that awaited.

The easy-to-view venue was effective in showcasing the emerging talent through the consolidation of top menswear and genderless designers. Each designer presented in his/her/their individual studio space highlighting the unique identity and inspiration behind each collection. Not only did each line differ in the way it looked, but each room also had a different vibe. A different story to tell, complemented by the music being played and the models in the role.

The five designers who presented in the morning session, each had a distinctive and unique identity that proved to be extremely alluring.

Let’s take a walk down their runway:

  • KoH T (menswear & womenswear)

KoH T is a Japanese fashion brand and a creative team with the same sensibilities. KoH T aims for a
a timeless wardrobe that takes advantage of the wearer’s personality, and presents a collection that
revives tradition and creates something new.

 

A collection that represents Human beauty reflecting the way of life and philosophy of each person. As a brand that creates things, they value the importance of working together to send messages of building a better life. Creating clothing
means respecting and acknowledging the process to appreciate the finished product, beyond automation. And that helps work towards achieving that better life.

  • ONYRMRK (menswear)

Based in Los Angeles, ONYRMRK delivers collections that provide space for individuality and self-expression. Often finding inspiration in the confluences of life experiences, ONYRMRK maintains a focus on sustainable and
quality manufacturing.

  • Stan (genderless)

Launched by surfer and fashion model Tristan Detwiler, STAN is based on sustainability and story-telling.
The versatility in every STAN piece is an allude to the designer’s life and background, where they created designs to be worn at the beach and on a night out. STAN uses textiles as old as 140 years, forgotten over time, and unveils their stories of travels, ownership, wear, mending and love. Some have been gifted, tattered, and passed down over
generations.

Making the perfect heirloom fashion. STAN prides itself on a unique approach to fashion construction using detail-oriented historical techniques of handcraft, mending, and quilting. The exhibition had their seamstress working hard at the sewing machine to show us the skilled craftsmanship that goes behind every piece.

  • Teddy Vonranson (menswear)

Teddy von Ranson is an American designer based in New York City. Teddy’s bi-coastal background (originally from California), combined with 15 years at the company that defined American fashion standards, has helped characterize his general aesthetic and values. This unique perspective facilitated the conception of a collection that acts as an ode to the modern creative and tech savvy American man; one as much attached to a West Coast surf culture as to the East Coast urban experience.

  • William Frederick* (genderless)

William Frederick was launched in 2018 by self-taught designer William McNicol in his hometown of
Cleveland, Ohio. William Frederick collections are made to be interpreted and to
provoke an intimate engagement with the clothing. Rooted in utility and usefulness, the brand’s
garments are designed to be trustworthy and reliable companions to daily life. What once was second only to the New York City garment manufacturing industry, the brand strives to restore Cleveland’s rich tradition and history of garment manufacturing, one piece of clothing at a time.

And that’s a wrap to the New York Men’s day morning showcase! From subdued natural tones to vibrant colours against a rainforest soundtrack, this group of talented designers brought a whole new meaning to Men’s Day.
