Madea and the gang are back for the hilarious sequel “Boo 2! A Madea Halloween.”
Madea, Bam and Hattie venture to a haunted campground and the group must literally run for their lives when monsters, goblins and the bogeyman are unleashed. The film was written, produced and directed by Tyler Perry. It stars Tyler Perry, Cassi Davis, Patrice Lovely, Yousef Erakat, Diamond White, Lexy Panterra, Andre Hall, Brock O’Hurn and Tito Ortiz. Our very own Chasity Saunders sat down with Tyler Perry. Check out our exclusive interview below:
Writer, producer, director, and star of Boo 2! A Madea Halloween. First of all, thank you so much for kicking it with The Knockturnal.
Tyler Perry: It’s my pleasure. My pleasure.
With everything that’s going on in the world, I for one, am so excited that for 100 minutes, moviegoers will get to go out and just escape their realities and everything they’re really dealing with, and go into Madea’s world-
Tyler Perry: You get it.
Which is hilarious and it’s so great. It’s even better, in my opinion than Boo! One. Tell me what your inspiration behind the second time around was.
Tyler Perry: It’s just that the timing was perfect last year. I think timing’s perfect this year for people to just go out and laugh because there’s so much going on. I wanted to just continue with this whole saga. There were many, many more laughs that I thought that I could pull out of the barrel with this one.
Speaking of your cast, it’s incredible. You have to tell me what the genius behind your casting methods are because you’re not only giving seasoned actors a chance but you’re giving brand new talent a chance.
Tyler Perry: I’ll tell you what I would do in the past. I would sometimes go to acting classes and sit in the back of the room, trying to see if there was talent there. Now, I can just go on YouTube and look at talent and find some amazing people. Digital is almost like the new talent show, where you can find amazing people. I definitely wanted to have them involved, have them be a part of it, as well as have these great and incredible moments of people like Hattie, Cassi Davis, people I love working with, and all of us coming together was awesome.
What I also love about your films is that you always give us something to take away. I, for sure, am going to take my 18-year old sister to see this film. But I could also take my 76-year old grandmother. Can you just talk about why it’s important, with your legacy and your body of work, that you are empowering our communities and the world, really, with your work?
Tyler Perry: It takes all of us coming together, to be able to move anything in one direction. To have a movie that brings families together, that you can bring your kids to see, that everybody can go out and share and have a good time with, that’s really important to me.
Do you have a stunt double or what? Because you’re writer, director, producer. You are playing multiple characters in this film. You’re Tiffany’s dad in the film, Medea, Uncle Joe, and then you’re actually a father in real life. So where’s your stunt double? You can’t be doing this all by yourself. How do you balance such a heavy workload?
Tyler Perry: I’m doing it all and … really, doing it all. But the thing is, it doesn’t take me as long as it takes things to process in Hollywood, so I can move a lot faster and, which gives me a lot of free time to be father and that’s what’s most important to me right now. I’m just trying to do my best to hold it all together and I think I’m doing pretty good.
