We caught up with Los Angeles based rapper AZChike.
AZChike is one of many new, talented additions to the Asylum roster, signing in partnership with R Baron Group and TK Kimbro. AZ talked about how singing with TK was destined and how he’s able to use social media to help persuade or show doubters they are wrong. Amongst other things, AZ also talked about his upcoming project Yors Truly and working with long time collaborator and label-mate 1TakeJay. Find out more about AZ Chike Below!
The Knockturnal: Can you talk about signing with the R Baron Group and Asylum?
AZ Chike: Me and 1TakeJAy signed the same day. We signed the same day to R Baron and we signed the same day to Atlantic and Asylum. Signing with TK is definitely a great experience.
The Knockturnal: Do you like that you and 1TakeJay signed at the same time? Do you feel like coming up together has strengthened your bond?
AZ Chike: I love it! I didn’t expect it though. You couldn’t have told me that. I met Jay a long time ago, of course through my boy Swish, shoutout to my boy Swish. I met a lot of people in LA through him, cause he was poppin’ way before me. Everything literally just be like, destiny. Now I just literally pay attention to certain sh*t.
The Knockturnal: What’s the project you recently dropped?
AZ Chike: F**k Waiting. I did a little 5 track EP, something slight.
The Knockturnal: And was this the end of 2019, beginning of 2020?
AZ Chike: End of 2019, by like September. You know something random. I just work so much, I got enough songs from today and months ago to put together, make something of it and still sound fresh.
The Knockturnal: What have you been working on?
AZ Chike: I’m coming a lot different, as opposed to my last project, Rich and Ratchet, I did a lot of beats with no melodies. Cause I really like rapping and I feel like I make the beat, the beat doesn’t make me. I got back into melodies. I usually do some unreleased sh*t, like I’ll do a thriller and it’ll go viral and the song’s not even out! I have an EP called Yors Truly, it’s basically a letter to my old me from my new me
The Knockturnal: That’s poetic, how many tracks are we looking at?
AZChike: 5 cause that’s what apple music calls an EP
The Knockturnal: You recorded mostly in LA?
AZChike: Absolutely, shoutout my boy he only 18 he dropped out of school to make beats for me, I love him forever. That’s my dude right there.
The Knockturnal: What will be the single off the EP?
AZ Chike: The single off the EP, I’d say the song called “Montclair” or “ F*** S***”, it’s not crazy, it’s smooth.
