Blossoming into an artist at the tender age of 20, Maya B is well on her way to stardom as a new artist on Capitol Records!
This multi-talented L.A. songstress has a grind like no other. Singing, producing, painting, and writing Maya B is already on tour and creating her own lane! On March 28th, The Knocturnal attended an exclusive intimate introduction to this multifaceted talent in NYC on the lower east side for a night of eye-catching, edgy sounds! Saying this party was aesthetically pleasing would be an understatement. When the party started, the entrance ascended like a garage door creating a block party vibe. Maya’s portraits, collages, and digital creations covered the walls, including a “rose bush,” which was perfect for a social media photo op. 24k gold chicken was served with champagne and fried macaroni, not to mention a digital nail printing booth, for mani make-overs! Everyone received a copy of Her Pain /Her Brain and some fresh digits by the end of the night!
Maya B performed, and according to attendees and people on the sidewalk, she definitely has IT. She performed her fan favorite “Dollar to a Diamond” off her EP and her single “Selenas”. Her sophisticated punk style, conscious lyrics, and hardcore delivery had the venue and entire sidewalk captivated. The artist was transparent about the origin of “Dollar to a Diamond.” When she sings “I Just Wanna be Balling” is about her frustration, from hungry-couch surfing to being tired of waiting for success. The artist explains “Dollar to a Diamond” “is about not being able to take care of yourself, and using creativity and dreams as fuel.”
While “I just wanna be balling,” is a cry to end the struggle and to celebrate cocky unrealistic dreams coming true. By popular demand, Maya B Decided to create her first Zine entitle Her Pain/Her Brain. Aiming to “constantly bring conflicting ideas together,” Maya B discovered a new side when facing artistic blocks. Painting through writer’s block and times where her creative tank was on empty, became a regular occurrence and self-therapy. Maya shared, “once I start painting, I feel great! I love painting because I feel like I discovered a way to express myself without being judged!” She added, “there’s definitely more art to come!”
