The heart watts what it watts. And at the opening night of Mezcal El Silencio’s immersive light art installation, ‘Antibodies,’ there were enough chest pounding visuals to light up all of downtown LA.
I had a good-ass time, y’all. This event had a very lower east side feel, but with that distinct laid back Los Angeles vibration. There definitely should have been cheese plates.
Artist Ginger Q put together a sleek and sublime showroom of dangling, daring fixtures, each with its own character. Some looked like water, others like the flames on the side of a lit ass pickup truck.
Local interdisciplinary artist JupitHer was a living light sculpture, at times perfectly still, at others mesmerizingly robotic in the face of curious throngs.
I spent half the event twerking in front of the dj booth with the other party monsters. Demon Slayer was beating it up behind the dj booth, feeding us chill-ratchet vibes alongside Jillesque from the Condina Records collective.
I tried each of the three literally flaming cocktails they had on deck, the spicy and punchy Oaxacan Old Fashioned, the sweet and not-subtle Neon Pink Drank, and the mature yet very bold Flame of Passionfruit. That one was my fave. I had two.
I didn’t want the night to end, but it was nearing closing time, and I was the tallest person there, which according to rules I just made up means I can’t be the last one in attendance. The event was held at Think Tank Gallery, the kind of place you’re sure you’ve been a million times, but then don’t recognize when you’re there. Hats off to Ginger Q and their team for totally transforming the space.
