Film Review: ‘Second Act’

You can succeed without a college degree. Well, that’s the case for Maya who’s portrayed by Jennifer Lopez (JLo) in Second Act.

From this film, audiences will take away, one: that everything happens for a reason in a specific season no matter one’s age; and two: you can have it all! Just don’t fake your resume.

Director Peter Segal, in collaboration with writers Justin Zackham and Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, have created a very predictable, girls night movie for working moms that teens and young adults can definitely find humor in. It was certainly clever to have two generational favorites, JLo and Vanessa Hudgens, act side by side which easily brings audience members of different age groups out to the theaters.

In a nutshell, after being robbed of a well-deserved position because of a lack of degree, and giving her all without receiving anything in return for 15 years; Maya is ready to wipe her hands clean of her boss. She finally quits her job for an opportunity that comes right on time, a luxe corporate position that will change her life. Of course, there is a plot twist, a case of false identification.

While going through boyfriend (Milo Ventimiglia) troubles and keeping the secret that got her foot in the door, Maya manages to shake up her new workplace with ideas that result in a not so friendly competition with her boss’ daughter Zoe (Vanessa Hudgens); who happens to be apart of a larger secret from Maya’s past. With support for her best friend (Leah Remini) and their “Monday Moms” crew, Maya is able to navigate her new life until she has no choice but to drop the facade.

Despite tremendous differences, this plot twist and the “rags to riches” theme is reminiscent of films starring JLo including Maid in Manhattan and Monster-In-Law.

Be sure check out Second Act in theaters tomorrow and let the cast and crew know what you think by following the films Instagram account @secondactmovie and by hashtagging #SecondAct.
