Exclusive: Chrissie Fit Talks ‘Pitch Perfect 3’

The third entry in the Pitch Perfect series has finally arrived, co-starring Chrissie Fit.Pitch Perfect 3 is a musical comedy film directed by Trish Sie and written by Kay Cannon and Mike White, the third and final installment in the Pitch Perfect trilogy. The film stars Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp, Hailee Steinfeld, Alexis Knapp, Ester Dean, Hana Mae Lee, Chrissie Fit, Kelley Jakle, Shelley Regner, Elizabeth Banks, and John Michael Higgins.

With Pitch Perfect 3 now in theaters and reuniting the fictional Barden Bellas one last time, The Knockturnal had the opportunity to speak to Chrissie Fit, who plays Florencia “Flo” Fuentes in the film.

The Knockturnal: Can you believe you did another Pitch Perfect?

Chrissie Fit: No, I can’t – I mean, yes and no. Because I think people love these movies so much that it was kind of possible that there would be a third one. But, until we were there and doing it, it didn’t it feel like real life.

The Knockturnal: You joined the cast in the second film. What was the welcoming like?

Fit: Oh, they hazed me so much, it was like – Nah, just kidding. [Laughter] I felt kind of nervous going into it because I was so excited, and then the night before I was gonna meet everyone I got super nervous. Elizabeth Banks [who produced and co-starred in the series, along with directing Pitch Perfect 2] was actually the one to take me downstairs to the rehearsal space, kinda like it was the first day of kindergarten.  And the ladies were just so warm and welcoming, and I felt like part of the group right away. It made it really easy for me to just like, jump right in and start singing and dancing acapella.

The Knockturnal: Which song would you say was your favorite in this movie and why?

Fit: Well, I loved the finale just because it was so emotional. We filmed it on the last day and so there was like a lot of feelings happening and we were reminiscing on all the time we spent together and how much we love each other. Because we are friends. Like, once the movie stops, our friendships don’t stop, we still hang out with each-other. We actually vacationed in Cabo together in May. We really care about each-other and to think this might be the last performance of the Bellas was really bitter-sweet and emotional. So I think that was one of my favorites, even though it was kind of sad too. Also, I really loved doing “Cheap Thrills” because it had a little bit of a Caribbean feel. I’m Cuban so the fact that we got to get down and dirty was fun for me.

The Knockturnal: This movie kind of takes a bit of an action route, were there any difficult stunts or action scenes you were particularly fond of or excited to take part in?

Fit: There’s this explosion when we jump off of a boat, so that was really cool. We all had stunt doubles just for safety reasons. But I’m a bit of a daredevil, and they were like, “Chrissie, do you wanna jump?” and I was like “yes!” So that was fun, it felt like a huge slide and you jump into this huge pool that they made for you. That was maybe my favorite.

The Knockturnal: What has changed from the second film to the third film in terms of behind the scenes. Are the routines harder this time around?

Fit: You know, you would think that it would get easier but I think that every  movie, they step it up as far as music and the arrangements and the choreography. So, we’ve really needed that Bella Boot Camp at the beginning of filming to get it all right. Because we’re competing against people with instruments, I think that the vocal arrangements were a little more difficult, with a lot of weird sounds that we’ve never made before with acapella. I think that was kind of difficult, but also really fun to experiment with and learn.

The Knockturnal: What are you gonna miss most about playing Flo? What do you love most about her?

Fit: I love Flo’s strength and tenacity and she’s so witty. She comes back with a dose of reality every time. Her sarcastic and sometimes morbid sense of humor is really fun to play, and I’ll miss that. Because I’m pretty different from that. I’m kind of like bubbly and positive, so it’s fun to play that whole different character. So those are the things I’ll miss. But most of all, I’ll miss being a part of the group, as a Bella.

The Knockturnal: Ester Dean was saying she was hoping for a Broadway reunion, possibly. Would you be up for that?

Fit: Yeah, I’d totally be up for that. Although, that would be really difficult and really cool. We wouldn’t need an orchestra though, we’d make all the music with our mouth.

The Knockturnal: Because this is the last film in the trilogy, were emotions high on set, or did you guys just make the most of it?

Fit: I think that within the first week or so, we decided that we were not only gonna have fun on set and all that, but we were also gonna create memories off-set, just in case it was the last one. Just to make the most out of our experience. And I think we did that. We went bowling, we went to a football game, we went to the zoo for my birthday… I mean, we went roller-skating with Usher, which was really cool!

The Knockturnal: Roller-skating with Usher? That’s on the bucket list.

Fit: Yeah, I think it was a Sunday night and Brittany [Snow, who plays Chloe in the series] had texted the group – we have a massive group text, by the way – and she texted the group about dinner plans and Ester Dean mentioned she was going to Usher’s skate party and said “does anybody wanna come?” And I think all of us just responded like “Hell yes” or “count me in”, or like, that emoji with the hand up. I was like, hand-up, hand-up, hand-up. And we went skating in Atlanta with Usher Raymond the 3rd. And it was magical.

The Knockturnal: Because you guys are so close, is it hard to get stuff done on set?

Fit: No, no. We’re all very professional and once it’s go time, it’s go time. But there have been times where we get the giggles and we have to wait a minute, reassess, then get back into it. Because if you’re in a scene with Rebel Wilson, it’s bound to happen.

The Knockturnal: What have you learned being around such dynamic women and working with them?

Fit: I’ve learned a lot of amazing things, but the most important thing to me is just the sense of community that we can have. The power of numbers. When you have a group of women all supporting each other, you’re going to thrive, you know? And that’s what we have. We all support each other and that’s how we’re succeeding. I think that’s the biggest thing. That stereotype of women catty, fighting with each other? Let’s put that to rest. That’s not true. We can all get along. We can all have a place in this. And I think that’s what I’ve learned the most.

The Knockturnal: That’s what you hope people take away from these Pitch Perfect movies?

Fit: Definitely. And I hope that audiences relate to at least one of us on-screen. I think representation is the most important thing. And so for me to be Latina in this group of strong, powerful women, is humbling and amazing.
