Why Project Hail Mary Starring Ryan Gosling Could Be the Next Big Sci-Fi Epic

The cinematic space race is far from over and the upcoming film Project Hail Mary is positioning itself as the next must-see science fiction spectacle. Starring Ryan Gosling and based on the bestselling novel by Andy Weir, the film blends high-stakes survival with intricate science — an ambitious formula that once propelled Weir’s The Martian into one of the most beloved modern sci-fi adaptations.

This time, the stakes are even higher.

The story follows Ryland Grace, a science teacher who wakes up alone on a spacecraft with no memory of how he got there—only to discover he may be humanity’s last chance to save Earth from a cosmic catastrophe. As the pieces of his mission slowly return to him, Grace must use science, ingenuity, and courage to solve a mystery threatening the survival of the entire planet.

For Gosling, stepping into the role meant confronting the same sense of overwhelming uncertainty his character experiences. “There was so much, it was overwhelming,” Gosling said of preparing for the film. “It felt like an impossible mission, just like the mission the character was on, that’s sort of where I connected to him [Dr. Grace]. I was like, he’s afraid of everything, I’m afraid of this. This seems impossible, he’s on an impossible journey, let’s just start there.”

The film is directed by filmmaking duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, whose previous work has ranged from animated hits like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse to blockbuster comedy. With Project Hail Mary, the pair shift into more grounded, emotionally driven science fiction, while still embracing the spectacle of a cosmic adventure.

But unlike many space epics, the filmmakers say the heart of the story isn’t just survival—it’s cooperation. “This is a movie about collaboration and people cooperating, working together, communicating and solving problems that seem impossible,” Miller explained about why the time felt right to bring the novel to the big screen.

The film’s emphasis on scientific authenticity also meant Gosling had to immerse himself in complex equations and technical dialogue, something the production took seriously to preserve the spirit of Weir’s famously meticulous storytelling. “Sometimes I had an earpiece in my ear and I had Andy [Weir] just telling me the equations because it was so important that the math be accurate,” Gosling revealed, highlighting how closely the author worked with the production. That commitment to detail is exactly what helped make The Martian such a standout adaptation, and the filmmakers hope to capture that same balance of realism and wonder. At its core, however, Project Hail Mary isn’t just about science or spectacle, it’s about watching capable people come together to solve the unthinkable.

“A lot of times we underestimate how spectacular it is to watch people get along on screen and accomplish things with competency,” Lord said. “That is the heart of what Andy [Weir] wrote in his novel, it’s what Drew [Goddard] wrote in his screenplay. It’s why it’s so special to watch Ryan Gosling and Sandra Huller and the entire cast do their jobs so well—it’s just fun to watch people succeed.”

In an era where science fiction often leans into dystopia, Project Hail Mary offers something different — a story rooted in curiosity, collaboration, and the belief that humanity’s greatest strength may be its ability to solve impossible problems together.
