Zac Efron is shirtless a lot …. just saying

The movie “We Are Your Friends,” starring Zac Efron, is a romantic drama that is all about discovering your passion and finding your own voice.  Set in a world where electronic music, high paced Hollywood nightlife, drugs, alcohol, and money is practically all you need to live a full life, an aspiring DJ named Cole (Zac Efron) and his friends spend countless days planning on how they will eventually make it big and live the big life.  But, it isn’t until Cole meets a world renowned electronic DJ named James (Wes Bently) that he starts to fully understand his true potential as a DJ.  However, things get a little messy when Cole finds himself falling in love with James’ younger girlfriend, Sophie (Emily Ratajkowski), and that’s where Cole has to decide whether he wants to be rich and famous or if he would rather be happy and in love.

“We Are Your Friends” is light, fun, funny, and brought some light drama. There were a lot of fun moments in this movie especially between Cole and his troublemaking three best friends.  There were no real dull moments throughout the entire film and even in the mellowest of moments there was always something to keep you entertained.

The cinematography of the movie is also something to make note of.  “We Are Your Friends” is TV show “Catfish” star Max Joseph’s directorial debut and he held nothing back with this film.  The film has a lot of scenes in parties and raves and the way that Max captured those moments was incredible.  The vibrant colors and the music paired with the parties that were shot really fit with the scenes.  And the use of unconventional filming techniques that can almost be viewed as freehand filming made a lot of sense with one example being the scene where Cole and Sophie were seen in Las Vegas at a rave; this scene in itself really shows Joseph’s great understanding of what style of filming should be used for different shots.  With this movie being Max Joseph’s directorial debut, one can only hope that there will be many, many more films where we can see him as director.

Lastly, this entire movie is centered on Cole’s desire to be an electronic DJ, so obviously a lot of electronic music was featured.  And it is safe to say that the music featured in this film was amazing.  There were scenes from the film where Cole and James explain how being a DJ works and what separates a good DJ from a bad one, and with that explanation, they give the audience a clear understanding of the electronic DJ world.  But, with that explanation they also gave a demonstration on how a DJ’s job is to make the crowd get wild and dance and they did just that with the songs featured seeing as it was hard not to dance our the seat once the song picked up.  As a final note, the last song at the very end of the movie was one of the best electronic songs in the movie and overall, the music selection in the film, especially with the electronic music presented by Cole, was a lot of fun.

“We Are Your Friends” is a fun movie that is for everyone and especially for the people who enjoy electronic music.  “We Are Your Friends” is set to release on August 28, 2015.
