WGN America’s newest record shattering hit series Underground has been titled the network’s most-watched program in early 18 years.

The popular T.V. thriller earned its spot on the top by bringing in 3.5 million viewers on its March 9 at 10 p.m. premiere, ranking it #6 in Total Viewers among all scripted cable series premieres this season.

“We couldn’t be happier with the outstanding performance of Underground, but the overwhelmingly positive response of the audience to this story about the unsung American heroes of the Underground Railroad is even more gratifying,” said Matt Cherniss, president and general manager, WGN America and Tribune Studios.

The 10- episode program, created and executive produced by Misha Green, Joe Pokaski and Academy Award winner John Legend, vividly tells the story of a group of courages men and women planning a daring 600-mile escape from a Georgia Plantation through the Underground Railroad.

The talented cast of Underground include Jurnee Smollett-Bell , Aldis Hodge, Christopher Meloni , Alano Miller, ‎Jessica de Gouw, Marc Blucas, ‎Adina Porter, Mykelti Williamson, ‎Amirah Vann, Johnny Ray Gill, Chris Chalk, Reed Diamond, Theodus Crane, James Lafferty, Renwick Scott and Jussie Smollett.
