Tyler the Creator has given the beat on Kanye West’s “Freestyle 4” a better home.
Tyler’s flow and lyrical ability have never been his main selling point. They’re both relatively top shelf, however his eclectic behavior and choice of content have aways protruded past his technical skill. On this remix of “Freestyle 4” however, Tyler really pulls in a lot of energy into his flow. His energy and lyricism are both gassed up on this track, without any sacrifices.
When we look back at Cherry Bomb, I think it’s relatively safe to say that the lo-fi grimy aesthetic he was shooting for was better executed on Kanye’s The Life of Pablo. This is why I think Tyler was able to dig into this instrumental so comfortably. If you were to take Tyler and let him rap over The Life of Pablo in place of Kanye (keeping the production) I think you would have a powerhouse of a record.
Tyler’s already shown an obvious interest in a lo-fi and dismantled sound prior to The Life of Pablo, but I am curious as to whether the record will have any influence in how Tyler approaches his next project.
However, if this remix is anything close to a taste of what’s to come then fans and non fans alike should both start buying tickets for the hype train.
