A twin bomb attack in Hua Hin near Bangkok, a popular tourist resort, left at least one dead and 12 people injured.
Reports have said that the blasts were triggered by mobile phone devices planted at a bar in Soi Bintabaht. The two bombs were most likely hidden in plant pots and then set off by mobile phones. The bombs were reportedly 50 meters and 30 minutes apart. Two motor bikes are also suspected to have been involved in the blasts. The explosions went off at 10:50 PM local time.
The explosions happened prior to a long weekend of celebrations in Thailand because Friday is the Queen’s birthday and a public holiday. Hua Hin is expecting many visitors over the holiday weekend.
Twin bombings are said to be common in Thailand’s southern provinces as armed separatists have been attacking those areas for 12 years. However, these bombings usually do not affect tourist hotspots.
Three of the injured are in critical condition. Both Thai and foreign tourists were among the victims.
