The premier of The Long Haul brought out discussion for the film’s core theme, forgiveness.
The Knockturnal spoke to cast of The Long Haul and both Margo Martindale and Stephen Root discussed how the films’ themes of forgiveness, handling loss, and retaining your friendships were a massive appeal for both of them to work on the film. Stephen Root took it a step further, noting how he’s known Martindale since the ’70s and jumped at the chance to work with her, as they’ve only worked together once in Uncle Frank.
He further noted how he enjoyed getting to work with David Drake as a direct, noting that his directing style, “he was a really nice, hands off director. He lets you do your gut work, and then guide you from if you wanted something else a little different. He didn’t hammer you over the head I really appreciated that.”
Martindale hammered home how she loved the themes of the film, “it’s a film about forgiveness and I think that’s very important…and how you deal with loss. I also liked how quiet the movie was.” Sprouse further discussed how excited he was to work with Martindale, but also felt fated to work on the film, “I’m a big believer in the movie gods, if I’m supposed to do a project you start seeing these little signs in the world. I know it’s a little woo woo but I was on the road when I got the script and I was driving across a part of the country we talked about in the script. So, it felt like perfect timing.”
