The Last of US Season 1, Episode 5 Review

This week’s episode of The Last of Us gave us a message. And that is, nobody is safe.

That is because we got the same linear video game adaptation of Henry and Sam’s death on the show. It must be said that even though this occurred within the source material of the show, I thought the television version of the events of the show worked much better because the actors really brought to life the characters’ lives within the show.

With that said, HBO’s trope of introducing characters and killing them off on various shows including this one cannot escape criticism as we got these character deaths along with Kathleen. There was not enough time developing these characters regardless of the little that we saw from them and this could hurt The Last of Us in the long run if this continues during the season.

I did like that we got to see Henry and Sam’s side of what they saw during the gas station shootout on the previous episode. It took all of 11 days for them to leave their hideout.

Then towards the end of the episode, Joel, Ellie, Sam, and Henry not only encountered Kathleen’s military, but also the swarm of the clickers and the giant Bloater. Sure, it was cool to see this chaotic scene. But I was left underwhelmed with the Bloater as it barely affected the intense situation.

The best scenes of this episode are how all four characters interacted with each other with some excellent dialogue and conversations to build a bond with each other. It was needed for this time in my eyes because everyone needed to learn more about each other rather than the usual “point A to point B” style of human interaction.

I really like this episode of The Last of Us. I just wish that there was more time to develop the other characters not named Joel and Ellie.
