During a warm summer day, two Spanish finance professionals vacationing in New York City saw a young woman knitting on the subway. This sparked their interest, and they realized that this popular hobby associated with sweet grandmothers was now a trendy DIY activity that millennials were enjoying not only in New York City but also in Paris, Madrid and other metropolitan cities. According to the Craft Yarn Council of America, between 2002 and 2004, the number of women knitters in the U.S. ages 25–35 increased nearly 150%.
That was the moment when Pepita Marin and Alberto decided to learn how to knit. Once they found out that there was a demand for sustainable materials, and stylish colors, they decided to create We Are Knitters.
On June 7th, they celebrated their 5 year anniversary with an intimate gathering at Bobo in West Village. We spoke to Pepita and Alberto, and celebrated their newly reached goal! : 100,000 followers on Instagram! The two friends reflected the excitement of what they created. The company now sells to several continents in the world. Their followers have created a strong community which helps each other throughout the knitting process, and even organizes knitting parties.
The company sells many knitting kits that range in level of expertise. Anyone from beginners to advanced knitters have a kit that will work for them. The kits include everything you will need to knit your masterpiece: yarn balls, wooden needles, pattern, sewing needle, and a We Are Knitters tag.
The yarns are made of the best quality you can find in the world. Merino wool, Peruvian Pima cotton, Peruvian baby Alpaca, and even 100% recycled t-shirt yarn. To seal the sustainable deal, the kits come inside a reusable and recycled Brown paper bag.
The styles are very current as Pepita herself said “We are like Zara but for knitters.” They maintain a fast fashion business model with new trendy styles coming out every couple of weeks. Their assortment is also phenomenal. They offer home décor, children’s wear, baby clothes, sweaters, cardigans, accessories, dresses.
