DKNY presented their fall 16 collection on February 17, at the Skylight Modern. Designers, Dao-yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne, paid homage to the brand’s history in their fall collection. They played around with themes from the first season (deconstruction, pin stripes, and tailoring) and reinterpreted them in fun and inspiring ways. They stated that they were
“Inspired by strong girl bands from the 90’s who were able to show sexuality with a tomboy feel, all the while making a statement through both style and messaging.”
Audiences were reminded of the quintessential 90’s girl. There were several over size pieces- trousers, blazers, puffer coats, and even a jumpsuit. But they strategically balanced them with more fitted pieces like slashed and lace tops, tights, and fitted dresses. The designers also proved that crop tops are not going away any time soon, there were several midriff baring tops. The over all vibe was that of a girl who was calm and confident, she presented herself to the world how she wanted to and knew how to stand out in the process. The result? A confident collection in black, white, and red- it couldn’t be more New York.
Front row included Jennifer Hudson, Mia Moretti, Irene Kim, Princess Deena A. Abdulaziz, and Yara Shahidi. At the end of the show, models then changed into limited edition DKNY sweatshirts that reinterpreted the acronym DKNY. Sayings included “Don’t Knock New York” and “Designers Know Nothing Yet”.
How’s that for flipping things on their head?
