I’m certainly one of those people who periodically will make herself wean from TV for some reason or another; I’m thinking I might have to wait until after the season finale of OWN Network’s ‘Queen Sugar’, though.

We recently had the chance to sit with director Ava DuVernay to discuss her new film 13th, a Netflix original documentary, which examines the United States’ status as having the highest rate of incarceration in the world, with the majority of the imprisoned being African-American. We also had the chance to sit down with Malkia Cyril and Kevin Gannon who are also featured in the film. The film is now streaming on Netflix.
On Friday, September 30, the New York Film Festival hosted an Opening Night Gala Presentation and World Premiere of 13TH. We attended and chatted with the director of the film Ava DuVernay, CNN News Anchor Don Lemon and others who attended the premiere.
Ava DuVernay, director of “Selma,” sat down to discuss the making of her new Netflix documentary, 13TH, during the 54th New York Film Festival. Named after the Thirteenth Amendment, which outlawed slavery, “13TH” synthesizes 150 years of history in order to examine how the criminal justice system affects people of color.
Last Thursday at Soho’s boutique Crosby Street Hotel there was a private screening of Ava DuVernay’s drama Queen Sugar. The series is a part of Oprah Winfrey Network and is created, directed and executive produced by Ava DuVernay alongside Oprah Winfrey.
