No stranger to making a statement Anniesa Hasibuan’s Fall/Winter 2017 collection finds its niche by infusing elegance with politics.
Art and politics have always used each other like sieves to filter emotion and provide perspective. Prabal Gurung, inspired and spurred by the Women’s March on Washington the day after the Presidential Election, flecked his Fall/Winter ’17 collection with white t-shirts that read “The Future is Female” and “Revolution Has No Borders.” Hasibuan’s Fall/Winter 2017 collection is no different.

Hasibuan ensured her models were all either immigrants or first or second generation models. Having already made history by showing an all-hijab collection at fashion week last September, this move is poignant to her message of drama. The women, the clothes—extravagantly made gowns, skirts and suits—all speak of power. Opening the show in a cold, virginal white, Hasibuan transitions, using jacquard, sequins, tulle and embellishments of pearls and Swarovksi crystals, into warm hues of gold and amber. The voluminous skirts made from tulle and wide legged pants made of velvet finish in glittering silver and black. It’s a passionate collection emboldened by Hasibuan’s intensity.
