Known for their top of the line cotton and cotton-based products, Supima returnee to this years NYFW to host their design competition for the twelfth time. As it’s been since it starts in 2008, based on their collections, eight graduating senior designers had the opportunity to display their designs, made from Supima fabric, on the runway. This year it took place in Pier59 Studios’ Studio C. Gina Guo (ginaguo_) from Drexel University went home with the grand prize of $10k for her collection; a series of flowy, blue and coral-based pieces inspired by Australia’s coral reefs.
Amongst the finalist included:
FIT’s Ishwari Vijh (ishvijh), who used her collection as a visual autobiography, drawing from her personal life; ending up with lots of ruffles and patterns.
Rhode Island School of Design’s Isabel Hajian (isabel_in_studio) had a collection that was quite playful and sought out to explore peoples relationship to their clothes.
Kent State University’s Shuxian Kong (louli_fashion_k) created each piece with a black and white base interrupted by loud colors with dueling patterns on asymmetrically layered tops and bottoms. Her collection was inspired by nostalgia, specifically her love for art during her childhood.
Parsons’ Andrew Kwon’s (Andrewkwon_official) “Whispering Garden” collection used lots of florals to depict a fairytale-like quality.
FIDM’s Illene Martoseno (Illenemo) focused heavily on structure and movement and created a beautiful ombré line. Reminiscent of waves and spirals that make up flowers and fingerprints, the collection definitely popped on the runway.
Savannah College of Art and Design’s Yoo Hyeon Kim (yoohiyeonkim_official)drew inspiration from the Herero people of Namibia and called her collection, “Intrinsic.” Filled with puffy sleeves and ruffles, the collection was definitely unique.
Lastly, Academy U School of Fashion’s Linh La (Linh.langoc) curated a simple line inspired by Judith Scott. The vibe was very much of Ancient Greece and Rome, the collection is truly elegant.
