The annual Beehive Block Party returned to South Los Angeles, bringing together live music, community, and the next generation of entertainment professionals.

The event was produced entirely by participants in the SoLa Live Accelerator Program which is a workforce development initiative created by the SoLa Foundation in partnership with Live Nation. The festival serves as a hands-on learning experience where students gain real-world skills in event production, artist relations, marketing, sponsorships, and more. As the program continues to create pathways into the entertainment industry for young people, The Knockturnal spoke with Jack McGrail, the Associate Director of the Live Accelerator program about this annual event.

 Tell us about the event.

Jack McGrail: The Beehive Block Party is the capstone experience of the SoLa Live Accelerator Program, a workforce development initiative created by the SoLa Foundation in partnership with Live Nation. Our students spend months learning every aspect of what it takes to produce a live music festival, from talent booking and artist relations to marketing, sponsorships, stage management, and production.

The festival takes place at The Beehive, one of South Los Angeles’ leading cultural venues. The Beehive has hosted major events including Black Market Flea and Everyday People, and the Beehive Block Party brings an exciting opportunity to host a real festival in a venue that has become so important to the community. The Beehive Block Party gives them the chance to apply everything they’ve learned in a high-pressure, real-world environment while creating an unforgettable experience for South Los Angeles.

How do you select students for the program?

Jack McGrail: The program is designed for young adults ages 16 to 22 from South Los Angeles who are passionate about music, entertainment, or creative careers and are eager to learn. We look for curiosity, commitment, and a willingness to collaborate, rather than focusing exclusively on prior experience. Many students come into the program with little or no industry exposure, and that’s intentional. Our goal is to open doors that have traditionally been difficult to access and provide meaningful opportunities to young people who may not otherwise have a pathway into the entertainment industry.

How did Live Nation get involved?

McGrail: Live Nation has been an incredible partner because they share our belief that talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not. Together, we built the SoLa Live Accelerator Program to give young people direct access to entertainment professionals and hands-on experience producing live events.

Throughout the program, Live Nation employees mentor students, share their expertise, and help students understand the many career paths that exist within the live entertainment industry. The partnership ensures students get to build meaningful relationships, develop professional skills, and gain experience that can lead to internships and full-time careers.

What skills do you hope the students get from producing the event?

McGrail: Producing a live music festival requires students to think creatively, solve problems under pressure, communicate effectively, and work as a team. While they develop technical knowledge to use in the entertainment industry, they’re also building transferable skills that will serve them throughout their careers, like leadership, collaboration, project management, adaptability, and confidence.

Just as importantly, they leave with something tangible on their resume. They’ve helped produce a large-scale public event in a venue that regularly hosts major cultural experiences, and that’s an experience few young people can say they’ve had.

Anything you want to add?

McGrail: One of the most exciting aspects of this program is that it demonstrates what’s possible when nonprofits and industry leaders work together to create real pathways into high-growth careers. The Beehive Block Party is proof that when young people are trusted with meaningful responsibility and given access to experienced mentors, they can deliver at a professional level.

Ultimately, our hope is that students leave not only with new skills, but with a network, a clearer vision for their future, and the confidence to see themselves as the next generation of leaders in the entertainment industry.
