The Norwegian duo behind last year’s song of the summer “Am I Wrong” are back with a new EP. Stream Nico & Vinz’ EP Cornerstone was released yesterday November 6th.
The 5-track EP follows Nico & Vinz’ successful full-length Black Star Elephant while taking a new spin on their signature sound, embracing pop, indie and dance for a flourishing, seamless fusion of genres.
Following the success of their inescapable double-platinum smash “Am I Wrong” and breakout full-length debut album Black Star Elephant, Norwegian-born and Los Angeles-based Nico & Vinz moved between continents for nearly two years.
They have shared stages with artist such as Usher, Bruno Mars, and Taylor Swift. When the time came to create their 2015 Cornerstone EP, the award-winning multiplatinum duo thought globally.
“When we came home, we were in a different place than when we left,” says Vinz. “Going everywhere and meeting all of these different kinds of people opens up the boundaries for the creative process. You start to ask, ‘How can we make a song that feels equally good to the woman in Japan, our friends in Norway, the guy in the United States, and the little girl in Ghana?'”
“This time around, we focused on being as open as possible,” adds Nico. “This generation isn’t bound by genres. We listen to everything, and the EP reflects that. We just wanted to write good songs.”
The first single “That’s How You Know” featuring Bebe Rexha & Kid Ink pairs a soft acoustic guitar strum with bouncy handclaps and a catchy chant. The song quickly racked up over 41 million Spotify plays in just three months and went platinum in Australia.
“It was so different from what people expected from us,” smiles Vinz. “It showed our sense of humor, and it’s also the first time everyone heard us curse,” he laughs.
Nico agrees, “We got to take a different approach to making music. It was refreshing all around.”
Nico & Vinz continue to cement themselves amongst pop music’s elite. In just the past two years, they took home “Best New Artist” at The Soul Train Awards. They’ve also had the opportunity to jam with The Roots during Grammy Week, headlined ESSENCE Festival in New Orleans, and score a placement in EA’s FIFA 15.
As side from top charting hits, simultaneously they have supported charitable causes whenever they could. Nico & Vinz gave a powerful performance of “Am I Wrong” and “In Your Arms” at the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize Concert. The pair played UNICEF’s Snowflake Ball with Jill Scott and the UN AIDS Gala in Switzerland as well as heading to South Africa for World AIDS Day alongside Zendaya.
With Cornerstone, the entire world will undoubtedly embrace Nico & Vinz even more.
