On Monday evening, The Knockturnal was on the scene for the world premiere of Starz’s new show “Gaslit” at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The show stars Julia Roberts as “Martha Mitchell,” Sean Penn as “John Mitchell,” Dan Stevens as “John Dean,” Betty Gilpin as “Mo Dean,” Shea Whigham as “G. Gordon Liddy” and Darby Camp as “Marty Mitchell.” It is executed produced by Robbie Pickering, Matt Ross, Sam Esmail, Chad Hamilton, Julia Roberts, Gabriel Roth and Josh Levin.
“This show started as an obsession with Nixon and the people around him,” said creator Robbie Pickering. “Me trying to figure out a lot of stuff about where we are today — where I am today.” He went on to explain how the show began as a solo venture that he embarked on late at night after his wife and daughter were asleep.
Pickering praised the talents of the team that he assembled to bring the show to life, from the talented writers, producers, post-production team, and actors. His passion for Gaslit was evident in the many stories that he shared from the conception of the show.
“We had a rule in the writers room which was: give Sean Penn funny lines,” Pickering said. “And Julia gave so much of herself to this role.”
Pickering extended many heartfelt thanks to Starz for believing and investing in the story, his creative partner Amelia Gray, and his wife, with his final thank you going to Martha Mitchell.
“I’d also like to thank Martha Mitchell,” Pickering said. “Martha is responsible for so much in my life that I have discovered about myself, about this period, and about us. And this is for anyone who has ever refused to shut up, even when it’s not convenient.”
Gaslit premieres April 24 on Starz.
