Theater Review: Staceyann Chin’s ‘MotherStruck’

The recent run of the StaceyAnn Chin starring, MotherStruck, at The Lynn Redgrave Theatre, not only broke static, societal boundaries, in the end it proved to be revolutionary.

A huge critical success, the show has received praise from the The New York Times, The Village Voice and Timeout Magazine. Self described as a “Jamaican-Born, Brooklyn-Living, Woman-Loving, Writer/Poet, Political Activist and Performance Artist. Single Mama,” StaceyAnn Chin’s long and varied career has included writing and performing for Def Poetry Jam, numerous performances and literature, an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, and the writing of her critically acclaimed book, The Other Side of Paradise – A Memoir.

Backed by the CultureProject, directed by Cynthia Nixon, and produced by Rosie O’Donnell,  MotherStruck allowed Chin to bare the entirety of her soul underneath the glare and heat of a theatre’s stage lights. Gayness, Blackness, international status, motherhood as a gay woman, gentrification in New York and Brooklyn, and the struggles of surviving financially in such an ever-changing real estate market, especially when one wants to mother a child, were some of the themes and motifs explored.

Chin’s MotherStruck was, in essence, a leading one-woman show example of how highly funded and produced Broadway, and Off-Broadway productions can be.  When all stories are given a chance, an opportunity to be shared, that day is the one when CultureProject’s mission of socially conscious theater is met.
