Sarah Kambe Holland, 25-year-old Gen Z filmmaker, discusses the first feature film to be crowdfunded on TikTok, EGGHEAD & TWINKIE, a coming-of-age story about an Asian-American teenager who comes out to her parents and goes on a road trip to meet her online crush with her nerdy best friend.

Known as the first feature film to crowdfund on TikTok, EGGHEAD & TWINKIE was funded by hundreds of total strangers on the internet who believed in the project. Twinkie comes out to her parents and leaves on a road trip with her best friend – Egghead – to meet her online crush, a social media star and influencer.

The Long Road Ahead

While sitting down to talk with Holland about the film, she mentioned what this movie meant in matters of representation with the cast and other cultural influences, as seen through her use of 2-D animation and inspiration from movies like Scott Pilgram and Juno.

While working on production through COVID-19, they had been delayed due to loss of access to location, equipment and other resources. This allowed them to begin the crowdfunding efforts to raise money for this film. This sparked the beginnings of the crowdfunding initiative on TikTok, which continued on Seed&Spark.

By taking this film to film festivals across the country, Holland and her fellow producer and editor, Danielle Fountaine and Kristina League, bring Twinkie’s story to their online supporters who have been waiting for years to see this come to life.
