As a millennial, it is so rewarding to have been alive during the 90’s love story error. I may have been too young for the full understanding of it, but getting a chance to acknowledge it, and watching it as an adult, there is no decade better.
Watching She Taught Love completely catered to my love for 90’s romance films. It was everything deep, romantic, and magnetic to the soul. The film follows two stunning protagonists Mali, played by “Arsema Thomas” and Frank, played by Darrell Britt-Gibson, journey to love as Mali undergoes cancer.
One of the joyous parts of the film is that both characters embody success. Mali is a sports agent to a top agency and Frank is a well-known actor, which we know is a hard task to uphold. Watching She Taught Love gives visibility to not only this love story but to young black girls that look like Mali. It tells a story that you deserve love, and that you are not only beautiful, but your existence is worth it, no matter your circumstance. Actor and writer of She Taught Love Darrell Britt-Gibson tells us that “Arsema Thomas” is “the exact female lead that we need right now”. As for me, I must agree with him, her look, her stunning chocolate complexion and all that she embodies is what we have all been needing in films right now.
“Arsema Thomas‘ breakout role in ‘Queen Charlotte” allowed us to get to know her and She Taught Love gave us a reason to fall in love with her. Make sure to tune in on September 27th on Hulu and selective theaters to watch the love story of the decade.
