The cast and special guests gathered for the New York premiere of “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll’s” second season on FX.
Season two of Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll premieres June 30th exclusively on FX. The cast includes executive producer, writer, composer and lead Denis Leary, Elaine Hendrix, Elizabeth Gillies, Robert Kelly and John Ales. Guest stars from season two include Callie Thorne, Griffin Dunne from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Mark Gessner. This season also brings an all new twist and includes more hip hop, sex, and tumultuous relationships than season one. We caught up the cast and asked them about their favorite part of filming from season two as well as their characters.
Dennis Leary
What was your favorite part about filming this season?
Probably the hip hop musical feast, as they call it “Familton,” we like that.
How did the new music transform the show?
It’s just that I think the second season of a series is always better if you’re lucky because the actors are better, the writers are more accustomed to what the actors want to do. So everything kind of jells better and that definitely happened with this group this year. There’s bigger laughs and the stories are more serialized and I think the music is better. Liz wrote a couple of songs this year which is great. We do have this big hip hop musical thing in the middle of the season which is great.
Elizabeth Gilies
What was your favorite part about filming this season?
I don’t know! There have been so many parts. I think that this year we find my character in a different place within herself. She’s lighter and coming into herself more and she’s having more and sillier and goofier and makes mistakes and it reminds me more of myself. There’s a lot of twists and turns this season and a lot of cliffhangers and I think people will be very surprised by a lot of things.
Can you tell us more about surprises this season?
I think that the audience shouldn’t trust any stability of any relationships and anything they expect is probably not what’s gonna happen.
What were your favorite songs from this season?
I wrote two songs this year and one is in the show and one is on the album, but other than that Dennis wrote a song called “so many miles” which is a beautiful ballad and I love it a lot and he wrote a song called “already in love” which is a fun rocker.
Rob Kelly
What was your favorite part about filming this season?
This season we did a take of Hamilton with Campbell Scott from last season’s potato famine musical and to have Campbell Scott in it. He’s epic, he’s the deal and we did a scene with him which is just me, him and Rehab and it was the best thing ever.
Can you tell us more about surprises this season?
There’s a lot of sex. This is sexy this year, the really pushed the sex this year.
