Every week, Scoreboard brings The Knockturnal readers the 411 on who is moving up and down the charts in the U.S., with an artist feature and a check-in on the international Scoreboard.

Billboard Artist Top 10

For the magazine dated September 10, 2016

See the full chart at http://www.billboard.com/charts/artist-100

Billboard Artist Top 10 Name Billboard 200 Album Rank Billboard Hot 100 Singles Highest Charting Single
1 Frank Ocean 1 5 79: Nikes
2 Drake 2 8 8: One Dance
3 Twenty One Pilots 6 3 4: Heathens
4 Rihanna 8 4 6: This Is What You Came For
5 Chainsmokers 140 2 1: Closer
6 Ariana Grande 15 1 15: Into You
7 Adele 7 1 9: Send My Love (To Your New Lover)
8 Shawn Mendes 91 2 10: Treat You Better
9 Tory Lanez 4 1 21: Luv
10 Justin Bieber 26 3 2: Cold Water

After years of waiting, Frank Ocean finally released his anticipated follow-up to Channel Orange and this week he comes in at #1 on the Billboard Artist 100. Ocean not only came back in August with the new album Blonde, but he also released a visual album Endless, overwhelming his fans with 35 tracks and 100 minutes of music right in time for Labor Day. With the album release, Ocean quelled months of anticipation and finished summer ’16 with a bang before the busy fall season. For more on Blonde. you can read the Knockturnal’s recent review.

The Scoreboard also gets a chart visit from Tory Lanez this week at #9, whose first studio album I Told You landed at #4 on the Billboard 200. The Canadian rapper has been releasing mixtapes since 2009, but @torylanez has only found traction on the charts recently with ’90s-sampling jams “Say It” and “Luv,” which reaches a new peak this week on the Hot 100. On “Luv,” Lanez get support from Sean Paul on the remix, trying to grab some of @duttypaul “Cheap Thrills” magic.

Special: Summer Scoreboard

With Labor Day upon us, Summer ’16 draws to a close and it’s time to crown some of the summer winners. The Scoreboard gets into the fall season next week with Britney Spears, but before we go there, let’s award some summer superlatives. Feel free to list your summer faves in the comments!

Retro Act of the Summer: Blink-182, @blink182: For one glorious week, the California punks brought back 1999 and topped the Artist 100. It also does not hurt that their 2004 hit “I Miss You” served as an inspiration for:

Breakthrough Artist of the Summer: Chainsmokers, @thechainsmokers: The New York City DJs were already having a good summer and then their new single “Closer” ft. Halsey blew up in August and took the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100, where it still reigns. You’ll be hearing about “that Blink-182 song that we beat to death in Tuscon” into the fall.

International Artist of the Summer: Sia, @siathisisacting: Coming out of Adelaide, Australia, Sia spent 20 years in the music business before reaching the top of the Hot 100 this summer with “Cheap Thrills.” Sia showed that with talent, perseverance, and a unique personal style artists can make it to #1 even in their forties. Read the Scoreboard’s International Spotlight on Sia here.

Group of the Summer: Twenty One Pilots, @twentyonepilots: The boys from Columbus, Ohio, dominated pop and rock airwaves this summer with multiple hits, including “Heathens,” which was prominently featured on the summer’s biggest soundtrack for Suicide Squad.

Artist of the Summer: Drake, @champagnepapi: No one had a bigger summer ’16 than Drake whose success on both the singles and albums chart easily earned him the top performance on Billboard’s Artist 100. This was especially helped by:

Song of the Summer: “One Dance” Drake ft. WizKid & Kyla. The song spent 10 weeks at #1 in the U.S. and 15 weeks at #1 in Britain, and it didn’t even have an official music video. Let’s have one more dance for this summer ’16 from @champagnepapi’s Saturday Night Live appearance.
