This week on the ScoreboardΒ Blink-182Β takes the #1 spot fromΒ Drake, ending hisΒ nine weeks at #1 on the Artist 100. NonethelessΒ @champagnepapiΒ records a ninth week at #1 on the Hot 100 with “One Dance” as well as aΒ fourteenth week at #1 on the UK Singles chart. Blink-182 and ’90s nostalgia are the main story thisΒ week, while elsewhere on the scoreboardΒ Maxwell enters the Artist 100 at #8 on the momentum of his new albumΒ blackSUMMERS’night, which comes in at #3 on the Billboard 200. This is his first album in 7 years, though per his interview withΒ the Knockturnal earlier this year there will not be anotherΒ seven year break beforeΒ his next album: “we have so many records now that it will be a lot sooner then the last was.” We hope to see you a lot more of you on the Scoreboard, @maxwell.

Artist Spotlight: Blink-182
Nostalgia for the ’90s is trending. Hillary Clinton is a few weeks away from becoming the official Democratic Party candidate for President, PokΓ©mon Go is aΒ sensation taking people to both funΒ and unsafe locations,Β and the members of Blink-182 – who are 40, 40, and 44 – are trying to bring back their ’90s golden days on the new #1 album in the U.S.,Β California. Though members of the band have changed, it’s not that @blink182 ever went away. Their last album came out in 2011, but they must have done something right this time around asΒ CaliforniaΒ gave the punk rockers from San Diego their biggest selling week since 2003 according toΒ Billboard.
Just two weeks ago, the Scoreboard featured the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who have also perseveredΒ to releaseΒ a hit album in 2016. AlthoughΒ both RHCP and Blink-182Β are ambassadors of carefreeΒ California rock, Blink-182’s latest albumΒ strives to convince listeners that Mark, Travis, and Matt are still rebellious teens, while RHCP are content to acknowledge their age. The album includesΒ two dumb yet brilliant tracks that clock in at less than 30 seconds – “Built This Pool” and “Brohemian Rhapsody.” The lyrics to the formerΒ are limited: “Woo woo/I wanna see some naked dudes/Thatβs why I built this pool.” Perhaps the nakedness refers to the band’s classic “What’s My Age Again” from 1999. While it is hard to imagine Green DayΒ referringΒ back to “Longview” in 2016, Blink-182 never releasedΒ the album equivalent of American Idiot, and now that they’re inΒ their forties they might as well milk the teenage punk formula for the new generation.
Elsewhere, CaliforniaΒ is full ofΒ bad romances, rock shows, partying, and SoCal geographical markers (three cuts are titled “Los Angeles,” “San Diego,” and “California”). It is clear that the band isΒ content to stayΒ young like Bart Simpson. MonitorΒ the Scoreboard this summer to see ifΒ the strategy of bringing back theΒ ’90s will keep Blink-182 on the chartsΒ with tracks such as CaliforniaΒ lead single “Bored To Death.”

Reminder: they’re from California
International Scoreboard:Β Jonas Blue
His government name is Guy James Robin and he is not related to theΒ Jonas Brothers, but he goes byΒ Jonas Blue. He is a 26-year-oldΒ DJ from London who first blew up last year with a tropical house cover ofΒ Tracy Chapman‘s “Fast Car” feat. Dakota, which did not make a dent on the U.S. Scoreboard but went to #1 in Australia and charted in the Top 10 across Europe. This year he is back with “Perfect Strangers” ft. JP Cooper,Β which has already climbed to #3 in the U.K. It appliesΒ the tropical formula of a recent U.K. #2 “That Girl” by Kungs vs. Cookin’ On 3 Burners ft. Kylie Auldist, which is I guess how you make the British Top 5 this summer. Stay tuned to see if Jonas Blue makes an impact on the Scoreboard in the U.S.
