“Underwater” is a thrilling story about a team of aquatic researchers, plagued by a random earthquake underwater. Like any sci fi thriller, the earthquake was the least of their worries. I think as far as sci fi thrillers go, Underwater went back and forth in tone.
At times it possessed the dry humor and comedic undertone expected from an actress like Kristen Stewart, while at other times it eerily reminded me of Alien, and other movies in that same sci fi wheel house. All in all, I do believe that this movie allowed me to see Kirsten Stewart in a much different light. She almost was reborn within this role. Whether it was her timing, her tone or her all around passion, I now see the growth and potential and the lengths her acting career can go to.
Ironically enough, in many interviews Kirsten Stewart did mention her absolute phobia of water, the ocean, and the mystery of its deepest depths. It’s almost is as if, this fear was the catalyst to her electrifying role as Norah. All in all, for a lover of romantic comedies and vintage French films, I would absolutely recommend all my friends and family to see Underwater.
