The Hustle, starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson, is in theaters everywhere Friday, May 10th, 2019.
The hottest place in Los Angeles Wednesday night was absolutely the red carpet of The Hustle premier, held at the ArcLight’s Cinerama Dome on Sunset Boulevard. Stars and fans alike flocked to the premiere of the film which is a new comedy in which Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson star as female scam artists, one low rent and the other high class, who team up to take down the dirty rotten men who have wronged them.
We spoke with director Chris Addison (Skins, The Thick of It) first. He found working with Rebel Wilson and Anne “incredibly easy”, and that the experience of making the film was akin to “a big gang just trying to make everyone laugh.” Although it sounded chaotic, Chris was quick to admit that “We weren’t working with nothing. We had a great script already written, it was about bringing the scenes to life.” Regarding his favorite scenes, Chris says the one in which Anne Hathaway decides to start singing a German folk song during a scene that seemed to run too long took the cake. It was unplanned but ended up being hilarious.
The screenwriter, Jac Schaeffer (TiMER) gave this piece of advice for the aspiring screenwriter: “Always write from your heart, from a story you know, based on a story you might have experienced.” This was the basis of some of her favorite scenes in The Hustle, which come from a reinterpretation of another film. The result is a “thoughtful but occasionally improv-infused”. Ingrid Oliver (Doctor Who) had compliments for Jac, saying “The lines are brilliant. I couldn’t breath from how funny it is. It’s unexpected and that hard to do these days”. Regarding Chris, Jac admirably remarked, “He should be your idol. That’s a good idol.”
When asked about what it was like working with director Chris Addison, Anne Hathaway (The Princess Diaries, The Devil Wears Prada), dressed in Elie Saab Pre-Fall 2019, was quick to say, “It was so fun. When things don’t seem to work, or time is running short, set can get very tense. But Chris broke that intensity and often the best and most authentic moments came in those moments”.
Ingrid Oliver had worked around Chris before on Doctor Who. She had nothing but compliments for the director, remarking that he “is so snappy, he simply knows funny.”
Other guests included Avril Lavigne, Jessica Vanessa, recording artist Ashley Brinton, Activist Gia Gunn (who will be at DragCon this year!), Meghan Trainor, stars of the hit Netflix shows Selling Sunset and On My Block, Corinne Olympios, and more.
