Check out what Princess Nokia said about her acting debut last week.
Last week The Knockturnal attended the exclusive New York premiere of Angelfish, directed by Peter Lee, starring Princess Nokia and Jimi Stanton as two star-crossed teenage lovers living in New York. Eva, played by Princess Nokia, is a child of immigrants, with plans to attend college. She lives with her mother and disabled brother who depend on her to the extent that she feels she has to hide her dreams from them. Jimi lives with his brother and alcoholic mother and works at a deli to help support his family. Both are faced with the responsibility of caring for their family and share more similarities than they expect. Find out what Princess Nokia had to say about her role in the film and upcoming music.
The Knockturnal: Can you tell us a little bit about the film?
Princess Nokia: Yes, it’s a beautiful film, it’s a New York love story, it’s just like Raising Victor Vargas and A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints, this is another New York indie love teen film for this generation. I had a great time working with the staff and the director, with my co-stars, everybody was wonderful and it was kind of like a big deal for me because I always wanted to make movies.
The Knockturnal: Can you talk about the similarities and contrasts between you, Princess Nokia and the character you portray in the film?
Princess Nokia: Me and Eva are similar in our kindness and how we treat people, our sweetness, our wholesomeness, but her at 18 and me at 18 couldn’t be anymore different and that’s not Princess Nokia on screen, that’s the farthest of who I was at 18. I was a wild child, a happy-go-lucky girl. I was into punk shows, I was selling weed at raves. I was having a good time.
The Knockturnal: Was it fun to step outside of yourself and play someone different?
Princess Nokia: Yes! That’s what I wanted to do I’m so glad you asked that, I was like I’m not gonna make this a Princess Nokia film, that’s stupid, let’s make it a new girl.
The Knockturnal: Can you tell us about your upcoming video?
Princess Nokia: I’m so excited, it’s coming out tomorrow, Friday November 14th
I get completely naked and it’s so fucking punk rock. I’m telling you this is the weirdest grossest and most amazing video I’ve done. It’s called “Balneciaga,” it’s all about dressing however you want and not caring. cause I don’t give a fuck.
The Knockturnal: Can you tell us about your upcoming album?
Princess Nokia: Well I’m not gonna say anything specific, but I will say this album is all about women and healing and creating an album that is timeless – it gives, I want my album to give and I want my album to give, I really want people to live with it and listen to it all over again and I wanted to inspire people, empower people, elevate people, make people laugh and cry and sing and really resonate with universal people.
