Director Shane Black has returned to the big screen with Play Dirty: a sharp-edged thriller that marks an evolution of the Parker crime saga, with Mark Wahlberg taking the lead. He steps into the role of a coldly efficient professional thief whose latest job goes wrong at nearly every turn.

Based on Donald E. Westlake’s anti-hero, this script was co-written by Black alongside none other than Charles Mondry and Anthony Bagarozzi (The Nice Guys). Their approach toward this version marks a shift from previous adaptations, which tended to retell the character’s origin story. Instead, Play Dirty positions itself further along the timeline of Westlake’s novels, folding in references from earlier books without relying on them. This standalone entry rewards familiarity without requiring it.
The series itself began in 1962 with The Hunter, which sets up Parker’s origin story and is followed by other notable titles including The Outfit, The Score, and Butcher’s Moon, to name a few. We get to witness a seasoned Parker here, navigating a high-stakes job that escalates into conflict with a dictator, a mafia syndicate, and a billionaire industrialist.
For fans of the Parker novels—and anyone who likes their heists with holiday lights—it’s a welcome return to form. For those just meeting Parker, this film offers a clear entry point as a film that stands on its own.
