Pi: The 25th Anniversary IMAX LIVE Pi Day Experience

For those of you who missed it, “Pi Day” was last Tuesday, and Blaze Pizza wasn’t the only one celebrating.

After 25 years, A24 along with Director Darren Aronofsky has decided to remaster the low-budget cult classic in 8K definition. Before the film, Darren Aronofsky answered a few questions from Entertainment Weekly’s Senior Movies Editor Josh Rothkopf, who moderated the event.

In attendance was star of the film Sean Gullette, producer Eric Watson, composer Clint Mansell, and of course director Darren Aronofsky, who’s gained popularity again after his Oscar-nominated film, The Whale. The Q&A was live-streamed throughout 25 other IMAX theaters across the U.S. from NYC to San Francisco.

The film centers around Max Cohen, an unemployed mathematician living in Chinatown, Manhattan who suffers from hallucinations and paranoia. As the film continues, Aronofsky successfully blurs the line between reality and psychological deception, both of which play a big role in how the film plays out.

A big topic of discussion at the Q&A was the fact the film had a micro-budget of about $120k back in 1998, and along with hard work and effort from a very talented cast and crew, they were able to premiere Pi at Sundance. When asked about the writing and directing process, Aronofsky stated that procrastination was a huge part, in contrast with his past self who always tried to turn over 10 pages a day.

If you haven’t seen the film, and are a fan of the Aronofsky tone, then definitely try to catch a screening or the 4K UHD release if they plan on releasing it. The remaster was great, it was nice hearing and seeing the film in such high definition (8K to be exact) and the surround sound added depth to the film it didn’t have before. You would think it would take away from the low budget effect the film has, but it just made it a lot easier to watch.
