Susan Korn is leading the game when it comes to combining fashion and fun. Her iconic bead-based accessory brand has taken the world by storm and she’s recently partnered with PEBBLES to create a one-of-a-kind collaboration celebrating the re-release of Berry PEBBLES. On Tuesday, The Knockturnal sat down with Susan to chat all about the collection!

The Knockturnal: This is obviously a food theme collection, and the intersectionality between food trends and fashion trends has been blowing up lately, mainly with fruits and berries like in this collection. Why do you think that is? And what future food trends do you hope to see within fashion?

Susan Korn: I think that food, design and fashion have so much overlap. You know, I think when you’re cooking, and when you’re creating, there’s the same type of brain waves that happen. When you’re creating food, you think of flavors and textures. And the same goes for creating things like jewelry or bags or anything. So I think there’s a lot of overlap. They’re both art to me. I love that there’s so much food and drink and everything in fashion, because it makes fashion so much more fun and real and attainable. So when I started, I was gung ho, full throttle fruit. And I always love fruit, but even I need other things in my life. So we’ve had so much success with anything like shrimp cocktail, or a tin fish necklace. Everything that’s food does so well for us. So I’m excited to continuously offer more food products. I have some things in mind that are just so bizarre, that I feel like it’ll be it’ll be really weird and I hope people like it, but it’s very personal to me. I’m super into garlic and onions, I’m really into beans, I’m trying to make all of this happen. Imagine like a full martini glass? Tomatoes?

The Knockturnal: Tomato girl summer!

Susan Korn: Oh yeah. Hell yeah. Olives. Yes, I’m fully on board for this.

The Knockturnal: What do you think of those trends?

Susan Korn: I’m like, I have been on that forever. I’m whenever. I love it. Finally, we can have our tomato earrings out and people will actually appreciate them.

The Knockturnal: Have your tomato and eat it too.

Susan Korn: Exactly, have your tomato and eat it too. And I love being hyper food sensitive. When I’m designing. I’m like, okay, so tomatoes are really ripe in August. So let’s introduce it in August. Like I’m very into seasonal. I like to get hyper realistic with those kinds of things. I am obsessed with food. I don’t see that ending anytime soon. I’m thinking about food right now.

The Knockturnal: You guys are really bringing back just the idea of being playful and having fun with fashion. Beaded jewelry has made such a comeback, which makes me so happy. What do you hope to see on this route? What do you hope that people do in terms of enjoying fashion more and being more playful?

Susan Korn: I think that’s the cool thing about the world right now. That, instead of following trends, people are really going out and doing their own thing. And I do feel like that’s helpful because we have Instagram, TikTok, and we’re seeing  the coolest people on the planet, or the people who just dress for themselves. And so I really love that, I love to see a person who’s distinctly themselves and wearing the things that make them feel good versus the things that are are trendy, you know, so I feel like our return to fashion that means something is soulful, meaningful and authentic.

The Knockturnal: I love this collaboration, it makes so much sense. Can you tell me a little bit about the collaboration and how it came about, and anything about it that you’re excited about?

Susan Korn: We started having conversations a while ago, and then from the second the email hit my inbox, I was like, “Oh, I know exactly what I would do.” Like it designed itself, it was so easy, because the Berry PEBBLES themselves look like beads, and beads are my favorite medium. It makes so much sense. I love to make sense. So I’m really excited. To be honest, I think the bag is just perfect. I just love the different textures, it’s so intricate. I just love it.

The Knockturnal:  It’s so beautiful. You said that beads are one of your favorite mediums, mine too! What is it about beads that you love so much?

Susan Korn: You know, I think they take the everyday and just make it even more exciting and more beautiful. So it’s like it’s life but heightened and I love that. I love that. It just makes everything more special. More shiny, more colorful. That means a lot to me.
