Parsons Graduate Gemma Hoi Showcases FW18 Collection at NYFW

Chinese-born New York-based designer Gemma Hoi, who graduated from Parsons School of Design, was the first of the day to showcase her Fall/Winter 2018 collection at Mercedes-Benz Manhattan this past Sunday at Nolcha Shows.

Her collection was entitled “Time Traveller 1940s”, and capitalized on the popularity of denim and its analogous uses for working men and women during the time period.

Born in Nacau, China, Nei Hoi, also known as Gemma Hoi, started designing at age 18. During her schooling at Parsons, Hoi received numerous scholarships and awards from some of the most prominent organizations in the fashion world: CFDA Teen Vogue, Eyes of Talent, WWD, and Bergdorf Goodman’s Window Display. In 2017, the New York Fashion Lifestyle Festival chose Hoi to present her collection, called “The Metamorphosis”, on the 63rd floor of One World Trade Center.

By now, Hoi has proved herself a young but powerful force in the industry of fashion, especially in her realm of “street couture.”

“Denim has always been inherent in breaking stereotypes and gender norms,” Hoi said, “and this collection was all about declaring women and denim as ultimate feminist forces that rebel against outdated tradition.” The pieces featured aviator-style goggles, flowing denim and dark linen pieces, and white-collar shirts.

Hoi’s show, along with two others on the same day, was organized by Nolcha Shows, which remains the launch pad for indie fashion brands. The day was sponsored by: Citibank, UPS, Sparkling Ice, ECRU New York, Twila True Beauty, BFROW, and AOFM PRO.
