On The Scene: Turkish Group NYFW F/W 2020 Runway Show

The intersection between innovation and fashion is always ever apparent especially in the first weeks of February in New York City. I had the pleasure of covering “The Turkish Designers” show at Spring Studios.

Seeing Hakan Akkaya’s colorful juxtaposition of colored fur and metallic jumpsuits, to leather harem pants and fur-lined outerwear. In a time where cultural appropriation and fetishization are so prevalent in conversations surrounding fashion, Asli Filinita did an amazing job of affixing her own cultural nods to a high end ready to wear collection. I think the idea of a strictly Turkish fashion show allows for cultural nods, inspiration, and appreciation to be seen in its truest embodiment.

We see Deniz Berdan, mother and daughter team, really pushing the limit against conventional fashion. The models excitedly ran, trotted and skipped down the runway in neon and streetwear-inspired garments inspired by trips to the LES or leaving Opening Ceremony at any given time. I think the connection between newer styles and influencers from traditional fabrics and silhouettes is a true testament to the talent and creativity coming out of Turkey.

I truly had an amazing time at the show and would recommend anyone to check out these emerging designers.

I also had the privilege of attending a “Galentine’s Day” mixer at the Magic Hour. It was very influencer adjacent meets aesthetically Instagrammable. I had a prosecco while skimming through products from various small businesses. I always think it’s amazing that we can regardless of the event, turn a holiday like Valentine’s Day into a day for everyone. The question I ask myself is whether or not it’s to support single women or create another revenue stream.
