On Saturday, Kristen Stewart, Jamie Dornan, Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal, along with other A-list talent presented awards to their fellow cinema colleagues at the 11th annual Hamilton Behind The Camera Awards sponsored by Hamilton Watches and Los Angeles Confidential magazine. Kirsten Dunst, who was also in attendance, graced the most recent cover of LA Confidential mag and Hamilton watches are best known for their watches making an appearance in blockbuster films such as Intersteller and The Martian.
The event was held at the iconic Avalon Hollywood with a red carpet entrance and seated dinner following as the awards were presented to those individuals in the Entertainment Industry who typically don’t receive the recognition they deserve because of their work behind the camera. These creatives who work behind the scenes from producing and directing to the hair and makeup department were all in attendances as Yvonne Orji (Insecure, Vacation Friends) hosted the evening.
The Knockturnal talked with some of those special individuals being honored for the evening including Pablo Larraín, who received this year’s Director Award for his work on ‘Spencer.’ Kristen Stewart presented the award to him stating, “It was one of the greatest gifts of my life to go there with you.”
Maggie Gyllenhaal was awarded the “Breakthrough Director Award” for her directorial debut on The Lost Daughter. She spoke on the power of a female winning this award specifically. With the film industry so heavily male dominate and typically led by males, Maggie’s win is a win for women everywhere in the creative space.
“You need millions of dollars to make a movie… the more, even financially, that space is made for women… but that will come from us just making work that people believe in and I would say, I guess, if you are a woman with something you wanna say I think we live in this incredible time where you really can pick up your phone and get the people respect together and make a short film.”
Dune got quite the attention this year and is projected to win many awards this award season. Javier Bardem got the crowd laughing as he presented the “Visionary Award” to director Denis Villeneuve. Timothée Chalamet was featured in a clip onstage and Bardem joked he would need to speak to his agent after not appearing in the clip.
The 2021 “Producer Award” went to the incredible producing team for Red Rocket. The hilarious Simon Rex, the star of the film, presented the award to Sean Baker, Alex Coco, Samantha Quan, Alex Saks, and Shih-Ching Tsou. He entertained the crowd and talked to The Knockturnal.
Haris Zambarloukos, who was the mastermind behind the cinematography of Belfast, was presented the award by Jamie Dornan. The animated film award went to Raya and The Last Dragon. The film’s stars Awkwafina and Kelly Marie Tran presented Lopez Estrada with the award.
The awards were followed by an after party upstairs where the attendees mixed and mingled on specialty cocktails, wines and my personal favorite, champagne. Stay tuned to find out who will be recognized in the upcoming 2021/2022 award season.
