On Tuesday, June 4, 2024, The Gotham Film & Media Institute hosted the first-ever Gotham TV Awards at Cipriani 25 in New York City.
The event celebrated exceptional talent and innovative series across television, creating a night filled with inspiration and excitement. The Knockturnal had the pleasure of being part of this historic evening, engaging with winners and honorees in a beautifully inspiring room.
Breakthrough Limited Series went to Baby Reindeer, an autobiographical tale by Richard Gadd, delving into the complexities of stalking and trauma. Andrew Scott’s portrayal in Ripley earned him the Outstanding Performance in a Limited Series award, showcasing his remarkable ability to embody Patricia Highsmith’s con-man character.
Colin From Accounts swept the Comedy categories, winning Breakthrough Comedy Series and Outstanding Performance in a Comedy Series for Harriet Dyer. The show, co-created by Dyer and her husband Patrick Brammall, centers around a romcom narrative sparked by an unusual car accident involving a dog.
Breakthrough Drama Series was awarded to Mr. & Mrs. Smith, a contemporary adaptation of the 2005 spy movie, created by Francesca Sloane and Donald Glover. The dynamic performance of Zine Tseng in 3 Body Problem earned her the Outstanding Performance in a Drama Series accolade.
The Breakthrough Nonfiction Series honor went to the Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show, which explores themes of love, sex, and truth through Carmichael’s lens of radical honesty.
In addition to the competitive awards, The Gotham honored industry legends with special tributes. Mariska Hargitay received the Anniversary Tribute for her iconic role in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Peter Morgan was honored with the Creator Tribute for The Crown, and Lulu Wang received the Spotlight Tribute for Expats.

The Knockturnal had exclusive conversations with some of the night’s most celebrated individuals:
How does it feel to be honored tonight?
Mariska Hargitay: Absolutely incredible. I’m honored for the show honored by one of my dearest friends, so that’s the fun part of life when everything comes together honored because I love talking about the issues and that I get to talk about something that sorta surpassed my dreams of artistic fulfillment.

Congratulations on your award. How are you feeling?
Lulu Wang: My arm is a little tired because this is very heavy, but no I feel great. It’s such an honor and I’m in such incredible company. I’m very humbled. Someone asked me earlier what do you think the word breakthrough means and I’m like sometimes we people think it means the end, you’ve made it and for me it feels like it’s the beginning when you’ve broken through it means you get to work now so i’m really grateful, I’m really honored.
How are you celebrating tonight?
Wang: By going to bed. I have a very early flight tomorrow.
What is next for you?
Wang: Well, I just got some chickens they haven’t come yet, but they are coming later this summer and so I’m very excited to be in the city of los angeles and have some of my own chickens and I’m working on other things as well but that’s what I’m most excited about right now are the chickens.

How do you envision television evolving for the future?
Anthony Katagas: That’s a tough one. I’m super proud to be working in television but what I hope it doesn’t catalyze cinema in the future I think they can both co- exist so we can have movie theaters thriving and beautiful cinematic type shows to the homes what I’d like to see is more diverse inclusive content being made and we’re only scratching the surface on that so i’m pretty excited about that.
Harriet Dyer: I think it’s getting more international, I think we’re really accepting other accents other ways of being other other countries other, we have captions if you need it we grew up in australia watching christmas movies when everything was in snow and we have summer down there at Christmas our whole lives are used to seeing other people shows and its nice to share our stuff now it would be funny to do a christmas episode America would be like what why are they swimming the pool.
Gotham also recognized the future of television with the announcement of The Gotham’s Series Creators to Watch. This initiative highlights ten rising creators who are pushing boundaries and showcasing innovative storytelling. These creators will participate in The Gotham Week Project Market, gaining access to industry resources and representation opportunities.
The inaugural Gotham TV Awards was a tremendous success, celebrating both established and emerging talent in the television industry. The night showcased the importance of storytelling, creativity, and the power of television to reflect and shape our world. As the evening concluded, it was clear that the Gotham TV Awards had set a high bar for future ceremonies, promising continued recognition of excellence in television.The Knockturnal was honored to witness and share in the triumphs of the night, marking a new chapter in the celebration of TV artistry.
