When I was first introduced to Oddisee it was through Tangible Dream. After first listen, as much in love as I’d become with Oddisee as an emcee, I was rapt with the vocalist on ‘Follow You’.
That soul slinging artist was Olivier St. Louis and I went on to devour his EP. Enamored with how he fit into every track’s groove, and made any soundscape he encountered his own, I sat waiting for another solo project.
Thankfully I didn’t have to wait too long and honestly I don’t mind since the product we’ve received is well worth the wait. ‘Ain’t Cool’ is a single for his upcoming EP Black Music and the track itself has more than enough soul to last a full project. The way Olivier slips into falsetto over such a funky baseline gives that perfect contrast that has me listening with a scrunched up face going “oooh”.
The track gives me joy and taking the title into consideration, that is what black music does. It brings people together in the face of oppression and adversity and gives them joy and there is a strength in that joy that nothing else can replicate.
