Eccentric brand Athanasiou took the runway at the Mulberry Friday night to deliver one of the most unforgettable New York Fashion Week shows from the SS19 season.
This collection, entitled “Amore!”, had strong hints of ’90s soft porn, from the velvet suit set modeled by porn star Ron Jeremy to a sweater vest reading, “I shaved my balls for this?” Exuding essences of kinkiness, religion, sex, and the forbidden, Athanasiou pulled out all the stops for this runway.
German designer Nina Athanasiou pulled out all the stops for this theatric performance that featured models of all shapes and sizes, including two of fashion’s most unique, Shawn Ross and Melanie Gaydos.
Dresses depicting interpretations of the Sistine Chapel added some pattern to the show. In between were beautifully tailored trousers, vintage blazers, and even a t-shirt reading, “You can’t get into my pants unless you love Jesus.”
Athanasiou has commonly toyed with ideas of religion and sex, and the show was fun, fresh, and varied in its looks and faces. Nina Athanasiou is no stranger to big shows. In 2014, she exhibited her next year’s collection featuring mid-century Japanese folklore, complete with gigantic faux-insect broaches.
