Nosferatu has received massive acclaim, and its Oscar nominations are absolutely deserved.

I had the fortunate to talk with the Oscar-nominated production team, all of whom were overjoyed to talk about working with Robert Eggers, the film’s actors, and the overall production team to bring Eggers’ vision to life.

I first spoke with Traci Loader (Makeup Designer), David White (Prosthetic and Makeup FX Designer), and Suzanne Stokes-Munton (Hair Designer), all of whom discussed collaborating with the actors to use the makeup, hair, and prosthetics to blend in with the special effects and reflect the film’s tone and period detail. I then spoke with Craig Lathrop (Production Designer), about how he crafted the film’s foreboding period look and atmosphere, along with accommodating the rats. Lastly, I spoke with Linda Muir (Costume Designer), who discussed designing the costumes to accommodate the heavy shadows and working with the actors to get them accustomed to the period accurate costumes

All of their work contain the unique distinction of capturing Eggers’ atmosphere. Nosferatu is more than just a period accurate film, it’s lived in. The world feels murky and raw, signally the presence of Count Orlok. Orlok feels tied to the shadows and darkness that inhabit Ellen and Thomas’ home, his mere presence sucking the life and light out of their lives. Orlok’s foreboding costume and prosthetic design feel perfectly blended with the lighting and VFX, thanks heavily to these people’s hard work.
