FLAMINGOSIS – DAYMAKER LP [KAHUNA STYLE]
The king of future-funk is back with his first studio album since 2016. Daymaker is an electronic journey through time and space, melding high energy future-funk beats with melodic soundscapes, spaced-out synths, and groovy guitar riffs. The 13-track LP is peppered with a potpourri of collaborations and samplings from both all-star talent and up-and-coming artists across a breadth of complimenting genres. With contributors ranging from keyboardist Borahm Lee [Pretty Lights], Jeff Franca [Thievery Corporation], Hunter Roberts, hip-hop funk duo Recess, and Mike Tallman [Euforquestra], all while incorporating samples from the late ’70s-early ’80s from the likes of Graham Central Station, Tim Maia, The Voices of East Harlem, Eddie Hazel, Niteflyte, and more. Daymaker is essential listening for poolside gatherings and nocturnal ventures all the same.
NOTAKER – SMYL [MAU5TRAP]
At the heels of releasing “Echelon”, his first single of the year, Notaker wastes no time as he unveils one of his most innovative and pivotal works yet, “SMYL”. Although he’s best known for his pristine midtempo and electro sound design, his latest cut sees Notaker experiment with breaks and emotive crescendos while preserving his knack for creating wholly immersive sonic experiences with narrative elements. In tandem with the original mix, Notaker conjured up two additional edits for the full release: “SMYL (Extended Mix)” and “SMYL (VIP)”. The “SMYL (Extended Mix)” is a nearly six-minute iteration of the original mix, and plays with a longer intro filled with trance stabs and traces of Notaker’s signature synth kit. “SMYL (VIP)” kicks the track into overdrive and flips it into a faster-paced slice of melodic drum and bass. Brimming with elation in every note, each track echoes the feeling of reaching a peak-time climax on the dance floor.
MDL CHLD – FUNK (ABOUT YOU) FT. NICOLE D’AMATO
Chris Corsini – alias MDL CHLD – recently released one of the most inclusive music videos of the year, “Funk (About You)” ft. Nicole D’Amato. The track is a feel-good song about minding your own business, knowing your worth, and focusing on yourself. This clever play-on-words serves to remind us that we don’t have to give a Funk about anyone other than ourselves. The music video takes the notion of inclusivity above and beyond with trans, gay, queer, BIPOC, and international representation. It also highlights the inclusivity we all need in this world with an Onscreen tri-lingual Deaf performer, behind the scenes Deaf Black Female ASL Coach, Deaf Caption artist working to design more visually appealing captions to entertain deaf viewers. With this release, MDL CHLD raises the bar and encourages all creatives to push themselves a step further to ensure that everyone can have access to their art.
RASHID AJAMI – NEVER KNEW EP [TOR]
Following his stunning Tale & Tone EP ‘You Don’t Know Me’, and a single on TOR’s Tales of Romance compilation, Rashid Ajami now releases his debut EP on the budding TOR imprint, the three-tracker ‘Never Knew’. Through work with the likes of Maya Jane Coles and Atjazz, the Londoner has built a sterling reputation with releases on Get Physical, Einmusika, Anjunadeep, and Tale & Tone. Here, he continues to purvey his exquisite brand of deep house. Kicking off the project is the EP’s namesake-“Never Knew“. A classically linear drumline sets the foundation, allowing the vocals and piano work to capture the spotlight. “Chasing Ghosts” elevates the energy with a sturdy house backbone. The closer, “Still Think About You” rests effortlessly at the center point of its predecessors. Synthetic tones welcome a darker edge, with vivid swoops and fluttering melodies riding the punchy kicks.
JOSH WINK – NEW YEARS DAY ACID (FT. JOHN TEJADA REMIX) [BEDROCK RECORDS]
On the heels of his contribution to UK native Miles Atmospheric’s recent 3-track Calling You Out EP, prolific DJ/producer Josh Wink continues his Bedrock Records streak with “New Years Day Acid”. Cited as one of the standouts from John Digweed’s Quattro II compilation – released earlier this year – Wink’s “New Year’s Day Acid (Beatless Reprise)” is finally launching in its original form. “New Years Day Acid” is Wink at his finest. With his masterful acidic twinge at the forefront of the track and a groovy bassline at the rear, the hypnotizing cut makes for essential listening from the Philadelphia native. To round out the release, highly acclaimed studio wizard and producer John Tejada was recruited for remix duties.
