RuPaul’s new Netflix series ‘AJ and the Queen,’ is a heartwarming, cross-country romp that’s as campy as it is sweet. She stars as Ruby Red, a seasoned queen who loses all her money and pride to a scamming ex, then tours the country with a troubled young stowaway.
Netflix launched the show with a fabulous premiere at Hollywood’s Egyptian Theater. Huge Drag Race stars Monique Hart, Trinity Taylor, Eureka O’Hara, Jaymes Mansfield and more were on hand for the gangbusters event, as was Hollywood royalty like Paul Feig, Melissa Etheridge, Drew Droege, and Danielle Haim.
Everyone was decked head-to-toe in red eleganza, a nod to the show’s star. This crimson cast of characters lit up the night not just on the carpet but during the screening and the luxe after-party at Liaison. Director and producer Michael Patrick King introduced Ru at the screening with a heart-rending, rousing speech, which led perfectly into Ru’s full-throated proselytizing about love and family.
The episode itself was both funny and emotionally wrought – this show is heartbreaking! Of course, we’re expecting both AJ and Ru to find redemption on the road, something we’ve all needed at one point and will again.
That afterparty tho. Ru DJ’d for hours as gay Hollywood twisted and turned the night away. An open bar and succulent hors d’oeuvres kept us energized and loose. Actress Izzy G., who plays AJ, danced next to Ru all night, which was cute as hell. This was one of the best night’s I’ve had in forever, a reaffirming and super fun night of queer love and light.
