The Knockturnal sat down with multi-hyphenated artist Ne-Yo to talk about becoming a father-of-five, his upcoming projects, and partnering with Old Spice to celebrate Father’s Day.
Grammy-winning artist Ne-Yo has created some of the greatest hits of our time, but now he’s talking about his newest role as father-of-five ahead of the birth of his daughter.
He and his wife Crystal Smith are expecting a baby girl any day now, and Ne-Yo said it’s “a little scary” due to some minor complications, but he’s excited to have a younger sister for his older daughter.
He said he’ll be spending Father’s Day celebrating his son’s birthday. “As long as he’s smiling and happy, I’m happy,” Neyo said.
This week Ne-Yo and his wife Crystal released a hilarious video for Old Spice’s “Dad’s Have Skin Too” campaign, which showed Crystal happily using all of her husband’s body wash products.
“Kudos to the people who wrote the script because it didn’t take much acting on our part because that’s pretty much how it goes down in our house,” he said. “What’s mine is hers and what’s hers is…hers! But it’s all good. Happy life, happy wife!”
“I actually use Old Spice, especially the body wash, this is not just me plugging Old Spice because I work with them. I’ve been using it before they even called me,” he said. “I took it as an opportunity for me and my wife to do something cute and silly and fun together for Father’s Day and it worked out beautifully!”
He said Old Spice is the perfect gift for dads this year because “if you don’t want to break the bank on some of these colognes, Old Spice’s moisturizing shea butter body wash, it works!”
Ne-Yo spoke about his upcoming projects and how fatherhood has played a role in the music he makes.
“I’ve fallen into a place where I’m a father and husband first and artist second. So with that being said, my music has always been inspired by my actual life and this forthcoming album is no exception.
“I write about my life, I write about things that happened to me and people close to me and my children have definitely inspired a song or two, my wife has definitely inspired a song or two. And so I try to make it to where if you’ve listened to a Ne-Yo album, you pretty much know me. That’s the best way for me to interact with my fans.
“If you really wanna know who I am, turn that Ne-Yo album on, and there you have it, that’s me.”
Ne-Yo’s album titled “The Escape” will be released this fall.
