Sixteen freestyle rappers battled it out in Miami this past weekend for the Red Bull Batalla Regional Qualifier, testing their quick wits and killer lines for a chance to make it to the world stage and take home the title of best freestyler in the Spanish rap world.

In a bracket-style tournament, contestants from around the country showcased their word strengths in the world’s largest freestyle competition. Miami was the last of three Red Bull regional qualifiers– the other two occurring in Los Angeles in July and Houston in August– with the winners of each heading to the National Final in Dallas in November.

The winner of the National Final not only will be named the best Spanish-speaking freestyler in the country, but will test their chops with top MCs in the Red Bull Batalla World Final, taking place in Bogotá, Colombia on December 2.

Emcees for the competition were comprised of the following artists: JD, Link One, El Domi, Sourius, Jay_Co “El León”, Vnz, BAN2, AdonysX, Zeu, Knnon, Mike, Adonys, Freites, Crown, Levi, and VersoMC.

The competition opened with a competition of its own, with two Secret Walls teams fighting against the clock to create the best emcee-inspired painting, made up of artists Ruth Burotte Tamfee (@rutamfi) and Marlon Pruz (@marlonpruz) against @chnkfondue and @zoegen.

Following the paintings’ unveiling, co-hosts Racso White Lion and Sonja La Makina invited the 16 competitors onstage to face an empty 16-slotted bracket. Picking their names out of a hat, the MCs themselves were able to place when they would take the mic onstage– and who strategically they would go up against.

As if the actual rapping wasn’t gripping enough, this proved to be quite a jaw-dropping face-off no one could have predicted. With certain slots empty and certain heavyweights waiting for their names to be called, a bracket was decided: up first, Link One vs. Zeu; followed by AdonysX vs. Mike; Vnz vs. Sourius; Jay_Co “El Leon” vs. VersoMC; JD vs. Crown; Adonys vs. El Domi; Freites vs. Knnon; and Levi vs. BAN2.

Freestyling in front of judges for the competition– and hip hop giants– MC Snow, Chester and Sara Socas, and with DJ Cesar providing the backdrop for the MCs, the following freestylers eked it out to make it to the quarter finals: Link One vs. AdonysX; Sourius vs. VersoMC; JD vs. Adonys; and Freites vs. BAN2.

As the lines got wilder, so did the fans, and the special guest cameo from El Misionero hyped people up some more. Then it came down to the final four: AdonysX vs. Verso and Freites vs. JD. With the crowd reacting and with the judges often ruling a tie and forcing the contestants to go at it again, JD and AdonysX were left in the final two.

In a thrilling back and forth held on the ramp of a literal halfpipe at Skatebird skate park, Venezuelan-born AdonysX came out victorious over JD and claimed his spot in the National Final, with last year’s Red Bull Batalla USA Champion OneR bringing out the Red Bull red, yellow and blue mic-shaped trophy. The Knockturnal caught up with Jay_Co “El Leon” and Link One before the Batalla to see what their creative process is like, and what it meant for them to be at the qualifier. Read our interviews with them below, read our other interviews with AdonysX, JD and Crown here, and check out more of our coverage of the Batalla here.

I am Dominican, I was born in the Dominican Republic. I started in freestyle back there, around 2005, and I started in Red Bull Battles since 2006. I’m a rapper, I do rap, rap music, I’ve collaborated with many rappers from Santo Domingo and other places, and I’ve stood out more for the freestyle area. I have lived in the United States for five years, in the New York area, between the Bronx and Yonkers. And I have been for four years now entering the freestylers competition in the United States and more in the Red Bull Battles, which is now gaining momentum here, in the Latino area.

Well, in fact, you know that in that period of time I have seen many MCs that come and go and in a certain way I have always stayed there or close to the environment of that. And I can really tell you that I feel like in those times when I was excited to meet new talents, I was excited to meet the ones I already knew, because in the end what I enjoy is improvising, that is, seeing how ideas connected, see how creativity flows and I feel super happy to see how this has evolved, because in reality I have worked a lot so that today the boys can do this without any kind of prejudice from society, as it was not before; before there was a lot of prejudice about this discipline. That we were delinquents, they are from the street, they use drugs, bad things that was not really the objective of this culture, which was precisely to keep young people away, which is precisely to keep young people away from the bad things on the street, that they give it another turn to your life and know that you can do what you like in a disciplined way and that you can take advantage of it. It can be your passion and it can become your job.

Well, I never really have such a strategy regarding freestyle, but when I’m going to face people who already have a lot of experience, I try to do the best I can. And as I tell you, it always excites me a lot. I see it as a sport, as if it were a physical discipline that we are going to compete in, but in a healthy way. And when people touch me, I have to be a little more careful, because they already know me better, they know more about my weakness, they know more about me. They are the ones I have to hit harder, as you say.

Host Racso White Lion performs during Red Bull Batalla Miami Qualifiers at Skatebird in Miami, Florida on 26 of August, 2023 // Ian Witlen / Red Bull Content Pool

Look, it’s good that you mention that part, because those were battles that are written battles. It has a difference with this Red Bull Batalla format, because this is improvising at the moment. If I knew the written battle, I feel a little more pressured than with the freestyle, because it’s like I’m very perfectionist when I’m doing. I almost never really like my thing. Yes, really, maybe they think not, but I am too demanding with myself. If you see something of mine, I’m going to say, wow, you are crazy. I’m going to be like, I liked it, but I can do better, I can do better, I can do better. That is the written battle if it presses me a bit, because those people are very good, it burns all those guys. In the end, all I try is to always improve myself and learn from each person with whom I face in a battle. Everyone has something to teach me, that’s what I was telling the boys, never limit yourself to learning new things. Never think that you already know everything or that you are already better. Because there is always a space for you to improve.

Vengo a ganar. Ganar. Ya esa es la palabra.

The fans, that I was forgetting, that usually due to time and sometimes some things, I don’t stop to read the comments of the battles a lot for a matter of mental and emotional health, because it is difficult if you like good comments , the negatives will affect you. I mean, you’re not just going to take the good stuff and then… I try to balance it, but I really value every opinion of every freestyle fan, I want them to know that we do this in the end for this reason, that every rhythm, every effort it’s for them to enjoy. And what I have to tell you is that there is still a lot left to fight for a while and that I come back stronger than ever. I have come to take what is mine, what has been my lot for a long time. I want my piece. I came to win. To win. That’s the word now.

Well, to write I have a different creative process. There are times when ideas come to me alone or as a melody or a punch line. I don’t write the songs, but rather I compose them in my head. An example, right now I can get an idea of a song that I’m doing, I keep doing it in my head and I learn it until I finish it. And for the freestyle, my creative process, I basically call it jumping something like that. I am already sure that it will arrive, I start to rap and that’s it. Like with the confidence that I know it will arrive, even though I don’t know what I’m going to say.

Olvídate, yo voy a saltar. Exacto. Yo voy a saltar.

Yes, because I have already done it many times. When you are going to jump, you know that you have a parachute, but your brain is going to scare you because you were not born to fly, but you know that you have a parachute, that is why you are going to jump. That’s how I do. I have the parachute, I’m going to do a show that people like, win or lose, it doesn’t matter. So, this is my creative process. It’s a little nervous, a little exciting at first, but I’m going to jump, forget it, I’m going to jump. Forget it, I’m going to jump. Exactly. I’m going to jump.

A lot, because in the end I am a fan of music, especially rap music and hip hop in general. There are many, right here there are

many people. Look, over there is Apache, over there is Sara Socas, over there with all the boys. There is Link One. They are people that I have been seeing their work for a long time. In the International Freestyle circuit, we have Aczino, we have many. I know a lot about Mexico. I would like to work with each league and each person from that, from each country, because in the end this has brought us together with people who were born in far away places and we treat each other like family, you know? And that in the end is the beauty of this is that it is a culture that unites a country, a race and one of everything, above how you are or how you live or all that. I always judge that. I am willing to work with anyone who is contributing to that.

Leave the comparison between countries and focus more on the positive. I think that despite the fact that it is a battle, that is, it is not to say nice things to each other, it is not for that, but always maintaining respect, which is the fundamental part of this, of this culture of respect, because for that was invented, so that you and I do not have to resort to violence and we can discuss anything with discipline and already show who is better. You know, I think that if we stop comparing so much to your country, to my country, to my people, to your people, I think it can still grow more, because we are not going to want to help even more.

¿Cantas en la ducha? Do you sing in the shower?

Anything that comes to me. What’s more, I sing this thing and I say what am I doing singing this? I started singing in the shower myself.

Y yo me escuchaba y yo decía suena bien. Me escuchaba.

And I listened to myself and I said it sounds good. But I don’t know, do you know what once they told me? The neighbors to my mom. That they already saw me on television, that I had already grabbed the network. He was listening to you. Yes, and that I knew that he was going to sing, because he always listened to him in the shower.

Lo amo, a mi contrincante, lo odio. No, mentira.

I love him, my opponent, I hate him. No, lie. To my opponent, take care, this is a battle and they are now my friends, I love them very much, but there are no friends here anymore. That we are going to compete healthily, that they give their best, that I am going to give my best. To my fans who continue to support me, that even though I am not so active on the networks, I always give my little check and see that they are there, that they like it and that we are going to continue improving so that they continue to enjoy it more and more. And we want this to become more and more popular here, because we know that there is a lot of talent and that there are a lot of people who like it who may not know that a lot of work is being done on it, you know? That is, it has been expected and supported a lot.

Link One

Well look, I come from a town called Cagues, Cagues in Puerto Rico is known as the center and heart of Puerto Rico. I am the third of four siblings and I am the only artist. The facets of entering art are because of my mom and my dad. I started hip hop very early, when I was 13 years old I started breakdancing, then I painted graffiti, then I started rapping and now I ended up producing and I have been practicing hip hop culture for more than 26 years and being an activist in its development of what hip hop is as a culture in Puerto Rico. I started with Red Bull in 2006. I participated in the National in Puerto Rico. I went to Venezuela in 2007, I had the opportunity to win the World Cup there. Well, I participated until 2009, when Red Bull took its MC and then I began to participate as a competitor when they opened the Miami qualifier in 2021.

JD competes during Red Bull Batalla Miami Qualifiers at Skatebird in Miami, Florida on 26 of August, 2023 // Daniel Zuliani / Red Bull Content Pool

bien interesante verlo de nuevo aquí.

Yes, with a lot of people, with Jay_Co, for example. Also Chester, from our generation, who is part of the jury. And it’s very interesting to see it here again.

Yes, I feel super good because, first, almost all the competitors of our generation took off. And all this, right? One changes, one grows and I know that there are situations in life that I am going to leave, but for me, since this is still my first love, seeing it, for example, that it was with the person that I was able to leave my name in history, still practicing it, this is very comforting, because you realize that practicing the sport of freestyle does not have an age, but that age is what limits you. When you think about how I am going, I am 42 years old, which is the real age that I am, that I am competing with these children, you are putting an age on art. Art has no age, art is free. I always do it in reference to painters. I go to paint a place and I see painters who are younger than me and I see painters who are older than me. And everyone is there for painting. And here is everyone for the freestyle. Generationally, I think age means absolutely nothing.

AdonysX poses with the winning trophy during Red Bull Batalla Miami Qualifiers at Skatebird in Miami, Florida on 26 of August, 2023 // Daniel Zuliani / Red Bull Content Pool

Yes, it is expression. Rap came at a time where I didn’t start it to write songs, I didn’t use it to express myself, I used it as a competition tool. When I started rapping it was because I came from breakdancing, breakdancing was very competitive, graffiti in the early 90s in Puerto Rico was also very competitive, because there are always others that practice it, competitions, where one faces the self. Being very competitive, when I got to freestyle, I was interested because of that, because of that part of the competition, of the confrontation, that I already come well with that of breakdancing, and I said wow, fabulous, because I like this one more, but no I have to throw myself on the floor and get dirty. Obviously it is also progressive with what was happening in Puerto Rico, which in Puerto Rico was like the breakdancing of the early 80s and 90s is the one that dominates the scene. In the 90s to 2000 breakdancing is at its peak and is doing a switch from… The events were breakdancing, but the spot where it was done was graffiti and it was filled with graffiti. And then, around 2005, more or less, a little further on, when Red Bull came in, the first concept of the Batalla de los Gallos came out, which obviously popularized what is happening today with the company.

Yes, I feel very proud of what social networks are in the Puerto Rican countries in what was the creation of hip hop as a culture, not so much in Puerto Rico, but in the United States. But I am also very, very honest that this was not something that only Puerto Ricans created. Obviously, Puerto Rico takes a greater share in terms of what is promotion, because that is what it gives. But really, when you look at the sociopolitical situation in New York at that time, it was a large community of immigrants who went to find their American dream in New York. And culturally all of that was what created hip hop. And I think that out of all this, the only thing I don’t like is that we, being participants in creating this great world culture, a culture of artistic change, the industry of Puerto Rican artists does not recognize them as such. They neither participate nor support its development and maintenance.

Well look, actually, what I left was, obviously, what the Red Bull competitions were, because it was the only international event

Apache performs during Red Bull Batalla Miami Qualifiers at Skatebird in Miami, Florida on 26 of August, 2023 // Ian Witlen / Red Bull Content Pool

that was taking place and that made up all these countries and all these artists. But I stayed in Puerto Rico. I developed hip hop in Puerto Rico. Already in 2014, when the concept did not exist, and I already saw that there were a number of young people who are practicing the art of the freestyle and had nowhere to express it or where to do it, well I already said this responsibility is mine. And that’s where we started. Obviously, technology arrived like it was for 2014, and then we created the concept and we went back on the attack again and rescued what the freestyle scene is.

Yes, it is a company. So you have to look at it culturally as a company and these are all young guys who are using it with alternatives, because apart from winning the competition and possibly being the best, all these kids are here for a dream. They are looking for an opportunity and they are meeting new people from different generations from other countries who are going to change their lives emotionally. Lose or win, when they go home, that is already in their memory forever and they met new people and eventually they will continue.

The first thing I say is that losing is winning. Because if you look at the freestyle life, all the mistakes we made taught us not to do anything wrong, right? When you lose the first battle and you understand that maybe it was that you weren’t right, that you weren’t mentally focused, that the other is very good and he won you, simply and simply, it’s not that the judges have it with you. When you learn to eliminate all that and just enjoy the moment and do what you do, emotionally that doesn’t affect you and it doesn’t come to be in terms of what a lot of freestylers used to do, that social platforms are very cruel events. They are very cruel, even they themselves are cruel to themselves and they choose to leave the freestylers and they became demotivated and maybe they themselves cut off those possibilities of things that they could achieve.

That’s for one, you have to go do your thing, win or lose, that’s just a moment, you’re not losing a kidney, your heart, your brain. It is normal. Something that happened and that’s it. As if he gave me someone else’s soda. Look, I asked you for Coca-Cola, you brought me fish and even well, you give it back to me. In other words, it is not something that emotionally has to affect him. And this new generation, well, many of them have withdrawn because of that, that’s why I want to make it clear to you that this.

The advice is to follow. The same. Work, you know, you have to work, you have to win, you have to lose, you have to participate, you have to join what they are doing, you have to contribute, you have to put up capital if you don’t have capital, if you don’t reward with time, you have to find people to help you, who cannot be on a plane. I am the artist, you are my employee, no, we are all together, do you understand? Because for us to project what you are creating needs teamwork that is the one who is going to organize it so that it is presented, it is not only you.

My creative process is art. I get up, music, coffee, I work with many artists and I am always looking for who is out there new to learn things and to stay active in art. It’s been about 10 years for me, what is this social format that one has to have as a person, to get a normal job, work, pay the bills, you’ll always have to do that.

It’s because it’s the same, because if I have the same debt, I have to pay the same for the house, the water, the electricity, the purchase, but if I do it like this, emotionally I’m not tied to anything. So I’m not like, well, I’m working in a company here dealing with, what do I know, digital art. But really, what I want is to be in the studio creating a little game for mobile games, which is really what I do.

To give this as a description, I am a Puerto Rican businessman. I work with what is the development of technology, applications and software creation. I’ve been working on this project called Link Bytes for about four years, which is an application dedicated to modern composers, where you can write, acquire rhythms, learn about intellectual property. It is a tool that will help this new generation, just like other projects I have. So, that, I’ve been working for about four years. We have an office in Caguas, with a really cool house, with a recording studio. So, I am doing these trips to do networking, so that I can take them to Puerto Rico, do camps with them, work on musical works. And then, exchange them, right? With the years of experience I have and all the people I’ve met who want to visit Puerto Rico and want to create. Well then that’s where we are. It’s like it’s already a business organization and everything has already taken its shape. It’s like I’m trying to give a business vision to what hip hop is made of.

I would like to work something with KCO, who is a Spanish rapper. I would like to work something with Gabilonia, I met her in 2007. There are a lot of kids here who have a lot of musical talents that nobody knows exist. I want to continue working with them, I don’t want to do anything else. With everything, with everything. They throw me away, I have a place to stay, a house, a pool, food.

¿Cantas en la ducha? Do you sing in the shower?

When it’s me I sing all the time and argue with my mic too, rapping, and then the moment comes when he sings back to me.
