A new aging technique that helps develop even more flavor in the Maker’s Mark bourbon

Last week, Maker’s Mark unveiled their latest expression, Maker’s Mark Cellar Aged.  And to celebrate the launch of the Cellar Aged expression, Maker’s Mark hosted a immersive celebration a Journey NYC where guests can sample delicious Maker’s Mark cocktails and try a glass of the new expression.  The event featured a number of activities for guests to try out including a cheese and bourbon pairing, engraving their own set of limestone coasters, and trying out the new Cellar Aged expression and comparing it with some of the other bourbons that Maker’s Mark was experimenting with.

What makes this expression special is that Maker’s Mark developed a new method to age the bourbon that doesn’t impact the taste of the spirit.  Typically, bourbon has a very defined aging time where it sits in the wooden barrels to develop flavor.  This is because after that set number of years, the bourbon starts to absorb some of the tannins from the wood and distorts some of the beautiful bourbon flavors.  However, the creators at Maker’s Mark found a way to extend that time limit and that was by aging some of their 11- and 12-year bourbon in a limestone cellar where the temperatures are much cooler and can be regulated better.  And the result is a beautiful caramel and vanilla rich bourbon that is so smooth and has a wonderful depth of flavor that we have not seen anywhere else.

Maker’s Mark Cellar Aged comes to New York in October and if you want to find out more information, you can visit the Cellar Aged site here.
