Earlier this month, Hip Hop lost a great one, the legendary Phife Dawg, member of A Tribe Called Quest, and the aftermath is still taking a toll on many of us.
Just last week at Phife’s memorial event at the Apollo Theater in Harlem many honorary artists like Kanye West, Busta Rhymes, Dave Chappelle, The Roots, Andre 3000, Lauryn Hill, Pete Rock, Scarface and many others came out to show their respects to Phife. KRS One continued paying his respect for Phife Dawg by releasing a new song in his honor. All proceeds will be given to his family.
The song is called “The Phife Tribute” produced by DJ Static and on the track KRS reminisces about when he first met Phife Dawg. He shouted out Phife’s wife and kids and gave them kind words of encouragement. He also incorporates some of Phife Dawg’s most classic lines like “A-yo Bo knows this and Bo knows that, but Bo don’t know jack, cause Bo can’t rap, well what do you know, the Di-Dawg, is first up to bat”.
After creatively incorporating some of Phife Dawg’s best bars, he then goes on to call out all MC’s to spit a 16 in honor of Phife. He loops the beat back with only instrumental to allow anybody to hop on the track. The song ends with KRS One on the chorus saying “Phife Dawg stays in our heart” which is nothing but the truth. All Dawgs go to heaven, rest in peace Phife.
